On Saturday, May 31st, and Sunday, June 1st, the Historic Village at Allaire in Monmouth County will, with the help of the New Jersey Civil War Heritage Association, time-travel back 150 years to present its fifth annual Civil War event.  New Jersey Union soldiers will establish camp in the village.  The public is cordially invited to visit and learn the story of our state and nation at perhaps the most critical time in their history first hand. The event will be open to the public from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Saturday and 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. There will be a $5 parking fee.

The "living history" event will re-create a New Jersey Civil War recruit training camp circa 1864.  The two-day camp program will feature infantry, cavalry and artillery drill exhibitions and parades, as well as a representation of the Great Central Fair held in Philadelphia in 1864.  The fair, which raised money for soldiers' aid, was highlighted by entertainment and displays of the art, technical innovations and curiosities of the day.

Saturday visitors will have the opportunity to have their Civil War relics identified and valued at the Heritage Association's "Civil War Road Show" artifact appraisal service. This year the evaluators will include guest appraiser Ric Savage from SPIKE TV's Savage Family Diggers. Sunday's schedule will feature a presidential campaign debate between Abraham Lincoln and his 1864 opponent, New Jersey resident General George B. McClellan. Although there was no actual debate held that year, the presentation will educate the audience in the critical issues of the campaign in an entertaining manner.  A series of other lectures, concerts and dramatizations will help re-create the era over the weekend.

The Historic Village at Allaire is located at 4263 Atlantic Avenue in Farmingdale, Monmouth County, NJ, off Exit 98 of the Garden State Parkway and off Exit 31B of Interstate 195.  For more information, contact the Allaire Village office during business hours, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., at 732-919-3500 or visit our website at www.allairevillage.org.
