Programmers Can Help Restore the Shore at Jersey Shore Comeback-a-thon

The hackathon event in Asbury Park comes with a $1,000 prize for the winning app developer.

Calling all app developers: your tech skills are needed to help restore the Shore business community. The Jersey Shore Comeback-a-thon will bring coders together at Cowerks in Asbury Park on Saturday for a 24-hour hackathon sponsored by Wall-based software company Marathon Data Systems. During a hackathon, developers have a set period of time to create a computer program or application that fits the event’s theme. JCP&L Rate Hike Hearings in Freehold Wednesday

Utility company petitioning state board for consumer rate increase

The state Board of Public Utilities is scheduled to hold a pair of hearings in Freehold Township on Wednesday on a proposed rate increase for Jersey Central Power & Light.  The first meeting is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at the Township Municipal Building, at Schanck and Stillwells Corner roads. The second meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. at the same location.  The utility company, roundly criticized for its response during Hurricane Sandy and the nor’easter that followed, wants a rate increase of 4.5 percent in its effort to raise $603 million the company says it needs to repair infrastructure damaged in hurricane’s Sandy and Irene.  The company faces opposition.  “We will speak for the hundreds of ratepayers who are tired of paying more for …

Local Businesses Hold Give Back Days for Relay For Life of Matawan

Shop local to support Relay For Life of Matawan, which benefits the American Cancer Society.

Support Matawan Regional High School's efforts to raise money for the American Cancer Society by shopping local. Several Matawan and Aberdeen businesses have designated give back days where they will donate a portion of proceeds to Relay For Life of Matawan. Relay For Life of Matawan will be held overnight from June 7 to June 8 at the Matawan Regional High School and will raise money for the American Cancer Society.  Members of the public are encouraged to participate in Relay by forming a team. The event kicks off with a cancer survivors' lap and then all Relayers join in and walk for an evening of raising cancer awareness and raising funds for cancer research and patient supports run by American Cacner Society.  The theme of this year's …

Chef at Drew's Bayshore Bistro Named Among Best in New Jersey

NJ Monthly's new peer-reviewed book lists almost 200 chefs across the country it calls the best.

A local chef at Drew's Bayshore Bistro in Keyport has been named by peers as being among the nation's most skilled in the kitchen, according to NJ Monthly Magazine. Andrew Araneo, who also owns the establishment, was among the 196 New Jersey chefs listed in the new peer-reviewed book Best Chefs America. The book publishers explained the chef nomination process on its website, writing, "Our analysts speak to nominated chefs across the country by way of appointment and telephone interview. Chefs are asked a series of proprietary questions that score their peers on a numerical scale and identify veterans and up-and-coming talent. The process is calculated to accurately record the opinions of leading chefs about the talent of their colleagues …

Relationships Fostered Between Local Businesses and Residents at Chamber of Commerce's Expo

The Matawan Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce held their 12th annual Expo on Tuesday

Business owners and local shoppers came together Tuesday for the Matawan Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce's twelfth annual Expo at The Reception Center. "The purpose of this event is to give the public a chance to meet and get to know some the the local businesses, organizations and non-profits that actually help with the economy and the stability of the town," said Cathy Zavorskas, president of the chamber. About forty businesses and non-profits set up tables at the event, including InStyle Salon, MetLife, Piazza di Roma, Matawan Historical Society and the Matawan Aberdeen Public Library. Papa Ganache of Matawan Competes in 'Cupcake Wars'

The Food Network reality show competition challenged four participating bakeries to make the best cupcake for the People's Choice Awards.

Life sure is sweet for vegan bakery Papa Ganache on Main Street in Matawan.  The popular baked good and lunch spot was invited to compete on The Food Network's "Cupcake Wars" and challenged to face off against three other bakeries from around the country. Papa Ganache owner Lisa Siroti was first contacted by the show last summer when she was asked to submit an audition tape.  "We sent it in and the producers loved us. They invited us to go to war," she said with a laugh. Although they knew the show was interested, they didn't know when or which challenge they would be asked to participate in.
