Woman Struck, Killed By NJ Transit Train in Hazlet Identified

The incident occurred along the wooded section of track between Beers Street and Holmdel Road.

Heather Gogan, 37, of Keansburg was trespassing on the train tracks in Hazlet when she was struck and killed by a NJ Transit train Wednesday night as it approached the Hazlet Train Station, according to NJ Transit Spokesman John Durso, Jr.

The 8:41 North Jersey Coast Line train out of New York was coming to a stop at Hazlet when it hit the woman around 9:50 p.m.

The incident occurred in a desolate area, behind the Hazlet Deli and Greek Store's parking lot.

The engineer of Train No. 3285, traveling west on Track 1, told investigators he saw Gogan walk into the gauge of Track 1, face the train and then put her hands up to cover her eyes, according to Durso.

The engineer sounded the horn and placed the train brakes into "emergency" but could not stop before striking Gogan.

"The engineer stated that when the trespasser faced the train she made no attempt to clear the track," Durso said.

Last night, the train sat motionless on the tracks blocking Holmdel Road past midnight, where it had been abruptly stopped. Dozens of personnel wearing badges and ID cards around the neck milled around the site in the warm night. Down the tracks, officials from NJ Transit worked under bright lights to investigate the incident, remove the woman's body, and verify the train's condition. Hazlet Police closed off the parking lot and streets and patrolled the platform.

About 200 passengers were on board the train during the accident, according to Durso.

They were offloaded and moved to the northbound platform to await another train that finally arrived around 11:15 p.m.

As three men waited on the platform, they traded stories of what they experienced from inside the train.

Dave Simon of Deal told how he had been sitting in the third car from the front of the train when the incident occurred. "I heard a thump. Like something grazed against the side of the train," he said.

Lenny Lapadula of Wall said he recalled the urgent wail of the train's horn -- and the sudden stop. "I heard the horn, just blaring," he said.

John Mazza of West Long Branch said the conductor then announced some sort of code over the loud speaker.

The accident remains under investigation by New Jersey Transit Police.

Editor's note: This story was updated at 8:15 a.m. Thursday with the name of the person killed and a description of the event from the engineer, as reported by NJ Transit.

Evidence the KILLER railroad self-investigates. How can this be legal to have killers self-investigate?

1. The train has video of this --- a public paid for thing ---Where is the video???

2. The train had a event recorder of brakes, lights, horns, etc...public paid for with humongous overcharges---Where are the event recorder readings???

3. The crossing signal housing has a event recorder with gate operation ---.public paid for with humongous overcharges---Where is the crossing house readings?

4. The crossing maintainer has a hand held that would show if the automated signals were calling him/her to come fix them. Where is the hand held???

5. The drug/alcohol tests on the train crew are?

6. The railroad control center recording is?

Are you really blaming the railroad because someone was on the tracks? Are you really being serious? I have not read a more stupid post in a long, long time. NJ Transit is not the only one that will investigate this, local police and FRA will also investigate. I can't believe how ignorant you actually are.

Local police will not investigate any incidence that take place on railroad right-of-way.

BP - I certainly hope this is a poor attempt at sarcasm because if you are at all serious you should RUN to get mental help.

This incident you referred to happened in August 2010. Last night, some of the local people were remembering the sad story.

While I am sorry for the woman's family to have lost a family member in this way, my heart goes out to the train crew that has to live with this.

I know that it will never happen due to the high cost, but these railroad tracks should be raised up. We live in the most densely populated state in the entire nation and deserve to have up-to-date infrastructure.

New Jersey seems to have much more train accidents than in New York, which probably has 5x the daily ridership.

My condolences to the family.

So we should raise the tracks because people use the train for suicide?

Someone once proposed installing high fences the full length of all train tracks.

Condolences to the engineer and the family of the woman killed. As in other locations, special telephones that directly connect to crisis hotlines are often installed on bridges. The issue here is the cost of a barrier, which with the numerous local crossings, couldn't adequately block track access.

Fences are stupid and cause sight obstructions at crossings. What if this had been a gas tanker that had jumped the median? Can the fence call the dispatch to stop the train? Lighting and monitored video with audio speakers would be better. "Hey you get off the tracks"

So sad. I've heard suicide referred to as "A permanent solution to a temporary problem." My condolences to the family and friends, and condolences to the crew - I've read that it can be traumatic for the engineer who is helpless to avoid it when the person is determined to proceed. Please seek help, guidance and advice if you every contemplate such an action.

My heart goes out to the family of this woman, but also to the Engineer...for the rest of his life he will forever see that woman turn toward him and cover her face. The Engineer is scarred for life because this woman took the easy way out. Suicide is a very selfish act. God Bless her family to have to live with this as well.

You are so right. The only thing to say is that it is so sad, and that somewhere out there, a family is suffering. They are probably reading these stories, because that is what you do, to try to understand, but they don't need to hear the moralizing and speculation.

I would like to thank you for your post asking people to stop posting the hurtful things they are putting up here. My family has suffered a tremendous loss and the cruel people who have expressed their opinions and are so quick to judge I can only say you have made a heartbreaking tragedy unbearable. And to the people who published the explicit details of that night you are a disgrace. And to all of the kind people who expressed their heartfelt sympathy and condolences we are grateful. I am the victims Mother.

Hey Jeff, give me a break. First of all, Christina is just correctly reporting what the spokesman said and secondly, she WAS trespassing on the tracks.

I believe the fact that it appears she committed suicide (wait for the experts to determine the cause of death), is much more of an issue than whether or not the Patch writes about her being a trespasser.

The real victims here are the woman's family, friends and the Conductor.

I live right behind these tracks and was first car in line waiting for this train to pass. The conductor did sound the horn loudly and longly before stopping quickly. He seemed very concerned and distraught about the women and in no way was responsible for this accident. They were concerned about the 200 passangers on board. This was a sad inncodent happening too close to home and I'm sorry for all those who were involved. There is no reason to point blame, but simply to keep all who whitnessed this evening in your heart and prayers

You all should be quite aware that this is suicide by Train. It is not NJT or Engineers fault. Woman was troubled and in these troubled times it should not be surprising.

The train video and station video should be a public document since we paid for it. A few railroads have been busted lately for doctoring video ---losing witnesses---BUYING witnesses---etc.
