Do Residents Need Another Walgreens?
A deal was recently brokered between Walgreens and the landloard at a vacated Exxon at the intersection of Cliffwood Rd. and Matawan Rd.
The vacated Exxon gas station at the intersection of Cliffwood Road and Matawan Road, directly on the border of Matawan and Old Bridge, may become a Walgreens.
According to a press release, R.J. Brunelli & Co., LLC finalized a series of leases with major retailers, restaurants and financial services tenants on sites throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
Among the leases completed was a deal between Walgreens and the landlord of 39 Matawan Road, LLC, where the gas station is located. The drug store chain plans to build a 12,705-square-foot freestanding store on the site, according to the press release.
Two other pharmacies are currently located at the same intersection, including a CVS and Carter Drugs.
R.J. Brunelli & Co. LLC, according to the release, is the same company the brokered the deal that brough Dollar Tree to Route 34 in Aberdeen.
The plan for the Walgreens will have to be approved by the Old Bridge Township Planning/Zoning Board.

Enough with the pharmacies - enough with the banks - enough with the dollar stores.
How about green space - which I realize does not pay property tax. The quality of my family 's life in Matawan has changed a lot in the past 14 years. No more small town feel :(

The location in question is currently a vacant gas station. How many of your tax dollars are you willing to appropriate to an 1/2 acre of land that is on a major intersection, completely surrounded by a shopping plaza and zoned comercial to realize absolutely no green space value.

Hi Dale,
The border cuts through that intersection, diagonally through the shopping centers.

There's another bank going up on Lloyd Rd. and Rt 34. Really?? Right next to Sovereign Bank, across from Colombia Bank, Wells Fargo Bank, Amboy savings and others I can't remember the name of. Bringing a total of six on one intersection. Not including the Chase bank in the Shop Rite. Enough already!!

I don't mind another business but come on now! How many CVS and Walgreens does one town need??

First it was video stores! Enough already with the banks, and drug stores! How about another food place. This town misses the Friendly's that was here. A place where the town people can get together after a social event in town. Not another bank or drugstore!

No matter what, you need a business there. Green space makes no sense. Who is going to enjoy green space at the corner of a busy intersection. Not to mention you have a state park two blocks away. I just wish the town would be a little more cognizant of what would actually appeal to its citizens. Maybe something unique to the area that you wouldn't be able to find any where near by. Just some ideas would be cracker barrel, chic-fil-a, Moe's, In-and-Out burger, krispy kreme, McAlisters, Bojangles, Waffle House, Red Robin, etc. I know people will say we don't need more unhealthy food places but who goes out to eat healthy food anyway. Plus its better than another pharmacy or bank.

Have to agree with all the other comments, no more banks, drug stores or dollar stores. Someone must think we have a lot of money and/or ailments in our town. No more small town feel; it is becoming too commercial with too many empty stores and properties around. Try filling those up and leave the green, green!

Enough with the pharmacies. How many do we really need at one intersection. The amount of pharmacies going up is almost as bad as all the banks going up.
