SJV Responds To Rumors of Insensitive Chant at RBR Basketball Game

RBR and SJV school officials attempt to quell rumors that some SJV students allegedly chanted "Where's Albert?" in the stands at Wednesday night's basketball game.

Saint John Vianney Principal Steven C. DiMezza said today that the school is investigating an incident that occurred Wednesday during a boy’s basketball game vs. Red Bank Regional High School in Holmdel.

"Inappropriate comments were made with regards to the loss of RBR student, Albert Martin," DiMezza said in a statement posted to the school website. "False rumors about chanting began circulating on social media sites.

"Matters such as this one are taken very seriously at Saint John Vianney High School," siad DiMezza. "We are in cooperation with the Holmdel Township Police Department and Red Bank Regional High School. Please be assured we will continue to work toward a resolution of this incident.

DiMezza continued, "Saint John Vianney High School understands and is very sensitive to the loss of a student as we have had three losses in the past few years. One individual’s insensitive comments are not a reflection of our feelings at SJVHS."

RBR students took to Twitter following the Dec. 19 game in Holmdel to express their collective outrage over reports that SJV students allegedly chanted "Where's Albert?" in the stands.

Martin, 17, a Red Bank Regional High School senior, died at Riverview Medical Center Dec. 3 after collapsing during a basketball scrimmage against Point Pleasant Beach High School.

"There was no chant," RBR Principal Risa Clay said in a letter sent to parents Thursday afternoon. Instead, there were "comments made by one or more students in a small group at one end of the gym."

"The fact that it was only a few students does not make this incident any less repulsive or any less painful for our RBR community. In no way do we excuse the actions of these students," said Clay.

Students tweeted their reactions after the game, which SJV won 47-33, one writing that she was "seriously disgusted by the lack of respect" and another who was "infuriated."

"We are family and no one disrespects our family," another RBR student tweeted about the incident.

According to Principal Clay, she and the school's athletic director met with Holmdel police and "a number of RBR student representatives" to investigate the matter Thursday.

The SJV principal and athletic director apologized to the RBR community and Martin's family and is taking the matter "very seriously," said Clay. "They are committed to finding the people who made these comments and addressing them accordingly."

"Over the course of the past several months we have shown the true resilience of the RBR community, a resilience that we must not allow to be weakened by the ignorance and insensitivity of a few, said Clay.

"Join me in rising above this negativity and staying strong while honoring the memory of Albert Martin."

Seriously? Were you one of the people in the stands asking where a dead child was? You are a piece of what's wrong with today's society.

Let kids be kids? That's what is wrong with our society because of comments like that. A young man is gone and you think asking where he is, is ok? Disturbing - even more so if you are an adult or god forbid a parent!

I am not surprised by these "supposed" actions. I attended a SJV football game this fall & was shocked by how rude and "class - less" the SJV announcer was. I couldn't believe the staff(principal a/o athletic director) at SJV was proud of the job the announcer did. I'm hoping that it is a paid position which might explain away a little of the rudeness. That being said, children learn by example....and in some ways I would expect a catholic school to set even a high standard!!!!

I attended a girls bb game several years ago when the student body exhorted a balck player from Christ the King to "go back to Africa",Chamique Holdsclaw who became a professional player in the WNBA. I went to Catholic High and if someone did that at agame they would probably be expelled.

Students attending Catholic school are expected to demonstrate a high moral code of conduct, especially high school students who are old enough to know better. SJV administration should not address this with just a slap on the wrist. A one week's suspension is entirely appropriate, which would send a strong message to the student body that this sort of repugnant behavior is unacceptable in Catholic schools.

Catholic school kids have always had a reputation for bad behavior. Most of the times their behavior is worse than any of the kids in public school.

@ Georgia, heyy!! Mr Halsey is awesome. Don't you dare disrespect him like that!! Shame on you. And why should catholic school kids be held to any higher of a standard than other students?

No disrespect...just observations of what I witnessed at 3 games this year. Roll the tape & watch!!!(or listen). And you are right, I guess I should expect at least a standard of common respect for human beings....not a higher standard. As I said in my original comment.....children learn from example!

Wow..I hope this was just a rumor because if it's true someone needs to beat some sense into the kids that were doing it! Let kids be kids?? Yes,but not when they are hurtful and disrespectful!

I attended two SJV Varsity soccer games (boys/girls RHS) and a track meet vs. Colts Neck HS in the past two school years. At all three events the behavior of the athletes on the field and the attending SJV parents was classless and verbally obscene. Whats going on at SJV? Quite a culture they have there.

I'm on the varsity soccer team and I really think you are mistaken. Our head coach instilled respect towards officials and the other team, and anyone who did was benched and given a stern talking too. Maybe you heard some snotty colts neck parents and athletes who were just being sore losers. Not uncommon at all over there.
