Sandy Relief Aid: Matawan and Keyport Among Communities to Receive Financial Assistance

Middletown, Manalapan, Beach Haven, Neptune and Oceanport top the list so far; more money to come from $60 billion federal relief bills just passed by Congress

More than $780 million in disaster assistance has been approved to speed recovery in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy - and some of the beneficiaries are hardhit Bayshore communities.

It's not yet clear how the money will be spent - and how the additional $60 billion aid package, which the U.S. Senate gave its seal of approval Monday evening, will be dispursed.

Middletown tops the list of funding recipients so far (see chart below), according to the state Office of Emergency Management. The town has received a total of $2,315,482.91.

Keyport and Matawan were included in the aid package and were allocated $38,250.00 and $193,576.32, respectively. Union Beach, which was devastated by the storm, was allocated $448,842.93.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, meanwhile, has allocated $4 million in funds to reimburse the towns for debris removal following Hurricane Sandy in a second round of funding.

FEMA says it has approved more than $300 million in housing assistance for more than 52,000 people. Housing assistance includes temporary rental assistance and grants to repair and replace storm-damaged primary residences.

More than $42 million has been approved to help survivors replace hurricane-damaged personal property and to help meet medical, dental, funeral, transportation and other serious disaster-related needs not covered by insurance or other federal, state and charitable aid programs, FEMA says.

Yes, I'd like the details on how they arrived at those figures. I don't see Keansburg on the list at all. Where the heck is Mullica?

i think the townships are getting money to pay back all the overtime they had to pay for clean up of branches and stuff probably in matawan and manalapan. but dont you think they would have a surplus of funds since we had little or now snow last year, nearly nothing this year. I cant wait to see what matawan does with this money.
