Car Fire Temporarily Closes Right Lane of Garden State Parkway Near Mile 118
A car was fully engulfed in flames Thursday afternoon.
New Jersey State Police responded to a car fire on the northbound side of the Garden State Parkway near milemarker 118.4 in Hazlet at about 1:15 Thursday afternoon.
The driver, identified as Jay Gonzales, 49, of Toms River, was experiencing car trouble when he pulled to the shoulder of the highway. When a NJ State Trooper arrived on the scene, the right side of the beige Buick was on fire. The entire car quickly became engulfed in flames, according to the New Jersey State Police public information office.
The right lane of the Parkway was temporarily closed due to visibility issues caused by thick black smoke billowing from the burning car.
Two fire engines were called to the scene out of concern the fire would spread to the brush along the highway, according to state police. However, the fire was brought under control before it could spread.
As of 1:56 p.m., the fire was extinguished and the accident was cleared shortly thereafter.
No one was injured during the incident.
