Update: Driver Charged with DWI After Two-Car Crash on Route 35 and County Road

Old Bridge and Aberdeen Police responded to the scene last night, involving two cars.

Update, 10 a.m. Feb. 1:

An Asbury Park man was charged with driving while intoxicated, driving while suspended, unlicensed driver and reckless driving after a two vehicle accident on Route 35 in Cliffwood Beach at about 6 p.m. on Thursday. 

According to Aberdeen Police Chief John Powers, John Ashenbrener, 37, was driving a 2006 Hyundai on Route 35 South when he rear-ended a 1999 Infiniti stopped at a red light on the highway at the intersection of County Road.

The Hyundai overturned and came to rest across the intersection on the median of Route 35. Ashenbrener was ejected from the car and was transported to Robert Wood Johnson by MONOC ambulance. 

The driver of the Infiniti, identified as Edward Thompson of Matawan Road in Old Bridge, was treated at the scene but refused further medical attention, according to Powers.

Sgt. Matthew Lloyd was the investigating officer. He was assisted by P.O. Frank Maisano, P.O. Matthew McDow, P.O. Roger Peter, Special Officer Michael Scarpa and Sgt. Raymond Sosa. Old Bridge Police and the NJ Department of Transportation also assisted at the scene. 

The accident caused long delays on Route 35 traveling in both directions.

Original Story, 7 p.m. Jan. 31:

An overturned car on Route 35 in Cliffwood Beach slowed traffic Thursday night.

Old Bridge and Aberdeen Police are currently on the scene of the crash, which involved at least two cars. The accident left a sedan upside down against the median and a small SUV spun into the center of the intersection of County Road.

At least two ambulances were seen leaving the scene at about 6:25 pm. The accident occurred in front of Addison Park, a reception center on the border of Aberdeen and Old Bridge Township.

It's unknown at this time what caused the accident or the extent of the injuries to those involved. Police are directing traffic around the crash site, which is causing heavy delays on Route 35 traveling both directions.
