Man Charged with Attempted Murder in Bed Bath & Beyond Stabbing (UPDATE)

Authorities say the victim did not know 19-year old Tyrik Haynes, who was charged with stabbing her.

Update, 1 p.m.: This story was updated with additional information from the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office.

---

JERSEY SHORE -- A Keansburg woman was pushing a child in a stroller as she shopped in the Middletown Bed Bath & Beyond when she was stabbed 12 times, according to authorities.

The victim did not know 19-year-old Tyrik S. Haynes, the Middletown man accused of trying to kill her Thursday afternoon, Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office (MCPO) spokesperson Charles Webster said.

Middletown police received multiple 911 calls reporting the incident around 4:09 p.m. on Thursday.

The 29-year-old victim was identified by CBS News as Kerri Dalton. She was transported by medevac to Jersey Shore University Medical Center after the attack, which resulted in both of her lungs being punctured, according to CBS News. The MCPO release said she is listed in critical but stable condition.

Haynes faces charges of attempted murder, endangering the welfare of a child and weapons possession, according to a press release from the prosecutor’s office. He was remanded to Monmouth County Correctional Institution with bail set at $1,050,000 and no option to post 10 percent of the bond.

Haynes was arrested last month after allegedly lighting a cat on fire on Christmas Eve, according to an Asbury Park Press report.

Haynes was scheduled to appear before Monmouth County Superior Court Judge Thomas Scully at 1:30 p.m.

Joe don't you understand it's your responsibility as a hard working middle class man to take care of others who are less affluent? At least that's what our great state of NJ tells us. All townships must have Mount Laurel housing or pay a penalty. Of course none of the elected officials would want to live anywhere near this type of housing, that's for us peons to deal with.

Right. This is the world that liberal democrats envision for us all. No longer can you work hard, save your money and live in a nice neighborhood. They will force this housing into nice places like Middletown to make sure poverty isn't just in the cities, but in even the safest, nicest places in the state. Ah, liberalism in action.

No Debbie, according to liberal Democrats (lead by the biggest lib of them all in the White House) it is my responsibility to turn over my money to people who don't share my work ethic. This monster who stabbed this poor girl lives in a low income housing unit. The democrats in Trenton keep blocking the governor's judges, which is our only hope of putting an end to this crap.

This guy is obviously mentally disturbed. Mental illness does not discriminate based on how much money one has (though the less money you have, the less likely you are to be able to afford mental health services). Maybe if this country had a better mental healthy system this tragedy could have been averted.

Levels of income are not to blame, especailly when most of the people in the development are hardworking people. It appears there are enough of ignorant bigots in Middletown. I am embarassed by your discourse sir. I am originally from the Chapel Hill area of Middletown, have owned 2 homes in the township in "desirable" areas and currently have an application for affordable housing in Middletown as my current salary is sadly within the range of such housing. And, yes, as the working poor, I can attest to a housing shortage, particularly after Sandy, rents are too high for me to eat as well. I, for one, would prefer my neighbors be economically limited over intellectually limited.

And Laura, I am embarrassed that you would look to others to subsidize your house. Instead of looking to tap into the fruits of others' labors, why don't you look to live in an area that you can afford? Or better yet, why don't you look into the hundreds of homes priced at under $200,000 that aren't taxpayer subsidized? Finally, stop belittling the intelligence of those who are paying for the government handouts you are looking for.

Jeff,

Care to elaborate on how low income housing isn't subsidized? I'm pretty sure HUD section 8 vouchers are taxpayer funded, as is public housing.

I don't think Joe is "showing hate" in the slightest light. In fact, I'm thinking Joe is just aware of reality. If you want, I can take you to some really nice public housing. We'll walk around for a day, and then you let me know if you want "low income housing" in the neighborhood your kids walk through to go to school.

Jeff - a word of advice - you are better off not offering a comment when you don't know what you are talking about. Low income housing is most certainly subsidized by the taxpayers. According to the State of NJ, each low income housing unit costs the taxpayers $116,000 to subsidize. That is an outrage, and explains why we are the highest taxed state in the union. And stop with the silly liberal tactic of screaming "hate" every time you can't make a substantive argument to support your viewpoint. You just prove once again the weakness in the liberal doctrine.

Given this guy set a cat on fire prior to this incident, it's clear he has mental issues. He should have been made to complete a psychiatric evaluation before being released after the last incident. Thankfully, this woman will be physically okay. However, this attack will no doubt leave lasting effects on her and possibly anyone who witnessed it. It's about time we make changes to the laws regarding those with certain types of mental illnesses as well as get harsher jail sentences for those who commit violent crimes

I agree with you Pat. No way should he should he have been released back into the general population. That is the problem with this country. They let these sicko's roam around when they should be in a treatment facility of some sort. If they did this, they would have avoided this attack, the Newtown CT shootings, and one that remains close to my heart, the murder of a little boy named Eddie Werner from Jackson. The parents of the killer pleaded treatment for their son and they were rejected. What happened, their teanage son killed the young boy! Something has to be done. This is obviously a major issue nowadays!

If you're not going to lock up violent insane people in NJ then at least allow us to protect ourselves against this kind of violence. Not saying this poor woman could have protected herself against somebody who comes up from behind with a knife. But think if people were allowed to carry tasers for protection at least one person in the store could have subdued him before he could stab her again. They don't kill but they are illegal in NJ. Not other states, only here. Why do you think that is? Why aren't we allowed to protect ourselves in this great state?

Low income housing has nothing to do with the fact that some people are sick in the head...this kind of housing was to help people that for whatever reason needed it. What we failed to do was put this man in jail for lighting a cat on fire. This shows a he was a creep capable of doing more harm. Ever notice these freaks that kill or abuse animals go on to murdering people! If they were taken to jail for the first offense of animal cruelty then this man would never be on the streets to do what he did to this innocent woman.

Agreed, he should have been sitting in jail for the animal cruelty. But to categorize people who live in affordable housing as undesirables or crazy is way off the mark. Given today's economy more people than ever need this type of housing. It doesn't mean they are mentally ill. And no, I don't live in affordable housing but I also don't like people take cheap shots at those who are experiencing hard times financially. We are all one paycheck away from needing affordable housing.

Here's a reality check shoregal - everyone is suffering hard times financially, but most don't look to confiscate others hard earned money to subsidize their lifestyles. Every house I've ever lived in has been an affordable house - it was a house that I could afford. I am sick of having to pull the load for more and more people who don't share my work ethic. Tell you what, if you want to subsidize someone else's house open your checkbook and go to it.

If they did, could they have gotten a clean shot,so that the victim, her child, and anyone else wouldn't be shot as well?If she had a gun, could she have pulled it out in time to shoot? He probably took her by suprise.

I think what people are trying to say whether or not it's politically correct is that we paid a lot of money to stay away from the violence of city type life. Yes I know violence happens everywhere but you have to admit there is a lot less in the suburbs then say New Brunswick. So we expect that for our taxes that we should be kept safe. Now bringing in low income housing sometimes (I said sometimes so don't freak out) brings in criminal type behavior. And yes I am well aware that some rich kids do herion and other drugs and some rich guys beat their wives. But for the most part not too many stabbings or car jackings etc happen here.

How did Petco sell him a cat without checking him out thoroughly? If you go to a Humane Shelter, you are asked a million questions and need to provide proof of your integrity, where you live and if you rent, you cannot adopt an animal unless you get written permission from your landlord. So why then, does this kid, obviously mental, allowed to purchase a cat, torch it and still be out on the streets until February 11. This makes no sense at all. Maybe if he was locked up until his court day, this young lady would not have been attacked. Someone dropped the ball on this one.... Also, I am so tired of everyone having mental illness and committing crimes. Does he leave alone, pay his own rent or does he live with family or friends. No one could figure out that their family member who he lives with or friends has a mental issued. Come on! Mary

I guarantee you that this guys family, neighbors, former teachers etc are not surprised one bit. This is the problem with kids who clearly show signs of being disturbed and they just get passed along until they are adults and decide to act on their derranged impulses. Don't tell me that people in his life didn't see signs that something bad was coming. This is why all the energy being put into the gun conversation needs to be refocused on mental health awareness and intervention. Bless the poor victim and her family.

Kat, agree with you completely. Drug usage (K2 specifically in this case) and mental illness is where the government should be putting its energy, rather than in the gun control pony-show . It is the mentally ill person who commits the crime, whether they use bombs, knifes, guns or intoxicated driving they are still taking lives. If we do not help the mentally ill, we will never keep our country safe no matter how many controlling laws are passed. I feel so badly for the victim and her family. Does anyone know if there is a fund set up so we can donate to her?

I am sure there were a million signs that indicated that this person had mental issues. It is not because of where he lives, high end or low end housing. To blame his mother or a priest as the above did is another type of of insane behaivior. Maybe, he should not have been released from jail after toturing the poor cats. Maybe, people should think about what they say bofore rattling off at the mouth. Maybe, the fact is, his own demons did this and he alone is responsible for his actions.

So true, I recently yelled at a cop who pulled a guy over for turning left on a just turned red light and had him double park in front of pizza wagon in bay ridge brooklyn. There were three drug dealers standing in the doorway who had made at least three transactions while I was waiting for my daughter to get off a bus and drive her home. The cops are only interested in targeting people who earn money.

It is obvious this is emotional for everyone. I have lived in Middletown for 40 years and this thing just doesn't happen here, until yesterday. Petco did not let this man aopt the cats. he got them somehow over the internet. This has nothing to do with financial status - affordable housing is a completely seperate subject and although necessary needs some reform in itself. In this case however, what we need is Mental Health reform. There is no help for people with mental heath issues. Heathcare companies cover it on a very limited basis making it vertually unaffordable for fmailies and in extreme cases the care is just not there. It is proven that people who are capable of committing violent acts on animals are just as capable of committing violent acts on humans. We need firmer animal abuse laws - these people need to be sent to jail or put into treatment facilities and removed from the genreal population before they commit these acts on people. This is my two cents.

I pay an exorbitant amount of money to live here and raise my child here. As a young mother who brines my child to BBB on a regular basis, I shiver at the thought this man was lurking around our area. Why should I pay so much to live next door to him? Ditto, unfortunately all of us that work our buns off to live in a safe neighborhood with a good school system and a nice house must also live with affordable housing and be subjected to derelicts of society with their hands out. We also have a "pedalophile/drug addicts/x-con motel in my beautiful 10k a year taxed town. They like to come into our area late at night a rob our cars for drug money. It's great walking out to go to church on Sunday only to realize you had your car broken into again! The people that are eligible for affordable housing usually are hiding income or have their baby daddy living with them or live elsewhere and rent it out to someone else to earn income. All of these government hand outs should be given for a certain amount of time and then cut off. Too many generations make a career out of welfare.

Mental Health issues need to be reevaluated in our state of NJ. If someone is not a minor and has a mental illness and has an incident, they are evaluated, and if it is found that they are not a danger to themselves or to others they are released usually within four days, not helped. People with mental illness think they are normal and telling them that this is not so, is fruitless. Loved ones and family want to help, but being that the person is not a minor we are actually not allowed to force them. If someone is 18 or older a parent would have to go to court and seek guardianship, which is not an easy process, because the state would appoint the mentally ill person an attorney and you have a battle on your hands which is not easy to accomplish. There are medications that do help, and if you can get your loved one to take them, they cost almost $500 a month. My heart bleeds for Ms. Dalton, her child, her loved ones, and my heart also goes out to the ones that loved this 19 year old boy that may have wanted him to get help, but were not able to. Killing of a cat should have been enough to give our system reason to keep him longer than the customary four days, and this needs to be rectified.
I am scared for my loved one now, people are angry, and rightfully so.
Please remember that being different is not the same as being dangerous.

Most of us did live "elsewhere"..until we could afford to live here. How many in Middletown came from Jersey City? Guess why the moved from there. Don't try to mask things and play semantics. Affordable housing means low income and low income often... maybe not always mean low class.

Why should one person pay full price while the person right next store gets it cheaper and guess who subsidized that affordable housing?

Helping others who can't help themselves makes a better world all around for all of us. That's why we pay taxes too. You don't like it, cause you can't see past your nose, but, in the long run, helping others means better families, happier kids, less crime hopefully. I've heard your arguement my whole life "they're getting what we don't get, they're getting this, we're footin' the bill.. blah, blah. Helping others is for churches. When the government does it, it ends up HURTING the hard-working people who carry the moochers on their backs. The fact that so many people are willing to go on welfare, food stamps, medicaid rather than pull themselves up shows how easy it has become to soak the poor stiffs who work for a living. I would rather work four jobs, move to Idaho or die than take a government handout.

Travis

4:27 pm on Saturday, January 19, 2013

Affordable housing has nothing to do with this incident, he was mentally ill and probably not treated. I lived in his complex and I pay a good deal for rent, it's not free living and the property owners get huge tax breaks and money from the government for building them. I fit into a bracket based off my income where rent is slightly reduced (more like what it should really be but that's another story). We pay taxes and buy into as we'll and this was passed by people you vote for. The kid from Connecticut came from a well off family, as did the Colorado nut. Not treating mentally ill and broken families are a big part of the issues, all of these mass killers had divorced families ironically. A strong family will help prevent stuff like this and treating mentall illness as well. Re open mental hospitals and make it affordable or have insurance cover it otherwise more unstable people will be flourishing in your community.

The reason democrats and republicans can't work together anymore ( I am neither) is because no one is willing to acknowledge that there are two sides to every coin. Yes, most people who live in affordable housing are hard-working and law-abiding. And Yes, social pathology and poverty go hand -in-hand. So while many people who live in this type of housing may be offended at being tarred with the dirt-bag brush, they also should know better tthan anyone that the majority of domestic violence calls are responding to these areas, that their cars are more likely to be broken into by their own neighbors, that the areas that borders low-income areas have a higher incidence of property crime. It may be ignorant to call people in low-income housing trash or dirtbags, but it is just as ignorant to pretend that there are no drug and crime problems associated with this type of housing. It may make you feel superior to Joe to assume that poor people are " good" people, but that doesn't make it true.

Like many said, some of the most notorious killers had high IQ and came from well off families. The issue is the fact this was sick and no one took it into consideration to get him help. The cat incident is sickening and should've been the first sign of personality disorder/mental illness. Jeffrey dahmer starting killing animals at a young age before he upgraded to people. The mother should've took the incident more seriously and got him the help he needed. Being black, white, rich or more means nothing. I, for one, would prefer my neighbors be economically limited over intellectually limited"

So you would prefer" my neighbors be economically limited over intellectually limited""

Let me guess you aren't moving to Keansburg just as an example, where you can afford housing without a subsidy. No, you want to live in Middletown still and have others pick up part of the tab.

You prefer " economically limited" might I suggest, Newark, Paterson, Jersey City, Trenton as just a few. Let me guess, you don't like those areas so much...yet that's what you can afford without the help of those "intellectually limited ones" that subsidize you.

On a similar topic, the township is planning on building very low-income housing on Unity Court (Rd) off of Woodland Road. They are building this housing for blind and disabled (read: mentally ill) as a way to fulfill part of the COAH requirement and the Fair Share Plan. They’ve already done a similar tactic by rehabilitating a house in Port Monmouth which houses mentally ill persons. This sleight of hand tactic by publishing it in the Two River Times as opposed to the press is similar to what they did in the opening of the methadone clinic on Apple Farm Road and Highway #35. People only learned of it when it opened at which point made it too late to stop it from happening.
Please check out the 3-acre property at the end of Unity Court, which is where the proposed housing will go. The public noticed appeared in the January 11th edition of the Two River Times.Coincidentally, this type of COAH finagling is also going on with our public housing originally designated for seniors and the disabled. Having spoken with an 80-year-old woman who lives in Tomaso Plaza who expressed fear at the number of threatening mentally ill residents who now live there, the township appears to have little concern for the health, welfare and property values of their residents.
The meeting to grant final passage and allow for public comment takes place this Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at 8:00 pm in the main meeting room at Township Hall.

Here's an idea...let some of them move in with YOU. You talk a good game, but nothing to back you up. As far as lack of nutrition goes...that's the fault of whoever does the cooking in their home. As one who lost her job at age 62 and was forced to take Social Security early because no one hires a person my age, I am now forced to live on a little over $800 a month. No food stamps, no free phone for me, I have to pay a premium for my MediCare (now that I'm finally eligible for it) each month. When I was still eligible for COBRA, it was costing me close to $300 a month. Why? Because I was a productive human being who spent 45 years in the work force, I am not entitled to the nifty little benefits the "poor" get. BTW...I am getting almost $400 a month less than I would have, had I been able to work until age 66, which was my intent. I haven't turned to a life of crime, nor have I started attacking innocent animals and people because of it. I simply make do on one meal a day, have given up my car and keep my heat at 62...no a/c in the summer, either. Give me a break with your bleeding heart attitude.

Conserned. You seem to think that everyone who qualifies for lo income housing is collecting welfare and not working. It's just not true! I know of a very hard working woman who left an abusive marriage and was able to get in.She worked until she died a few years ago.

Open up the old Marlboro institution and fill it. Give the indigent jobs monitoring the medications of schitzophrenics and the pschyotics and anti-socials. Don't let's pretend that on the basis of two or three child study meetings these misfits can be rehabilitated and mainstreamed back into the general population. He belonged in a straightjacket in a room locked away from the Kerri Daltons of the world. In an era with few employment oppertunities re-opening Marlboro Institution would provide employment to many and keep such filth off of the streets.

@marylou...of course I know there are hard-working people living in low-income housing and it isn't all welfare trash. Unfortunately, though, the workers are few and far between. I grew up in a neighborhood that was six blocks away from a housing project...many decades ago...and many of my friends lived in that housing. Their parent(s) worked and they were there because they had to be. Obviously, though, this is not always the case. Open your eyes, Marylou, and give an honest look around at the "projects" people. I remember on Sunday, my husband and I got lost in Perth Amboy and he turned down a road to turn the car around. Unfortunately, the road led to a project's parking lot. Our car was immediately surrounded by six large men, one of whom said, "Get out of here while we're willing to let you." That is your typical projects trash these days. I also couldn't help but notice you had nothing to say about my plight...which is the plight of millions of people in this country right now. Most of us haven't turned to a life a crime, although I would guess some did.

Concerned, perhaps you should go over and look at where this mentally ill man lives. It's far from what would be considered "the projects." I don't know exactly where in Keasburg this young woman lives, but much of Keansburg would be considerd to be more like "the projects" than the complex where this guy lives. Some of those townhouses sold for $400.And his mother may work.I remember that the woman I knew who moved into low income housoing in Holmdel(!)was prequired to show proof that she held a job for several years..
I do feel bad for you.I know it'd hard to find employement of to start over at your age. But,there are many who would consider you lazy and a bum because you are out of work. You should know that things aren't always as they appear, and not judge others if you don't want to be judged.
My husband and I are far from rich.We live in a working class neighborhood. We pay our bills. But,yet,I'm sure that people look down on us because we don't live in a McMansion.

Two strikes...burning the cat and escalating to attacking a defenseless woman who was with her child...and heaven knows what he did in between the two incidents. He needs to be jailed...permanently. Isn't it about time that society starts taking care of the innocent people, rather than letting this type of garbage back out on the street to commit their crimes over and over again? Situations like this, Conn. and many others is going to keep happening more and more often. Some children and young adults have issues that need to be addressed, and mainstreaming the problem children into a regular education class is not the answer.

This is a very unfortunate incident. Almost every post here consists of blaming someone. This could happen anywhere and the suspect could be white, black, brown, yellow and could be wealthy, mid income or poor. I am quite sure if anyone was able to help this poor woman they would have. He could have had a gun, could have begun stabbing someone else or even the baby. Many 911 calls were placed. Instead of voicing many ignorant opinions and incorrect facts think to yourself, how can I help this situation? Maybe send a card with a gift to the poor woman. This will scar her for the rest of her life.

Why wasn't he placed in a mental hospital after setting fire to cats? Hard to believe some sick stranger can start stabbing you in Bed, Bath and Beyond. Glad she is going to live. Same day a stranger threw a woman on the subway tracks in Philadelphia. Luckily, she climbed out in time. They got the guy. Another sickie. Notice guns weren't involved in these attacks.

To all whom believe being armed will help; the suspect was armed and did this. If she retaliated with a weapon he may have harmed her baby. We should not add weapons we should take away weapons. If there was a law passed to carry a weapon the injury and death count would multiply. That is not the answer.

This stuff rarely, if ever, happens in places where law abiding citizens are allowed to arm themselves.

I'm not exactly sure how low income/affordable housing is even an issue in this case. The point is...the man is nuts! I wouldn't care if he lived in Beverly Hills. Sane people don't set cats on fire and most certainly don't go to BB&B and stab a random woman pushing a stroller. And I'm not exactly sure what democrats have to do with this either. He is a sick man, carrying (or taking) a knife from the store and committed a random act of violence. People actually suggested that BB&B should not sell knives. For real?? Why don't we ban water too because you can drown in a glass of it!

I can't even believe you are mentioning that he was black . The thing is he is mentally disturbed (he set cats on fire). He should have been hospitalized and treated. Maybe he has schizophrenia. No normal person anywhere would kill or try to kill a complete stranger, or set fire to cats for that matter. No normal person would throw complete strangers on subway tracks or shoot children in school. There's got to be more watchfulness for signs of mental illness. Instead the government is pushing for gun control for people who have had guns for years and never committted a crime. What about all these shootings in the inner cities done with illegal guns? What about crime and gang control? No, they just want to take guns away from sportsmen and hobbyists, so the government can have total control. This is as bad as prohibition. The banned alcohol, so people made their own or bought in on the black market. Crime was rampant from all the bootleggers. And then the people in Congress missed their cocktails and got rid of the law.

To all that condone weapons: the more weapons being carried the more violence. A simple whistle could have alerted for help and most likely make the suspect run. I am quite sure he was stronger than she and if she had a gun he would have gotten it and most likely killed her and the baby. We have all lost our patience while shopping, driving, waiting in lines and if we had guns in our pockets who the hell knows what could happen. Our country would literally become the "wild west".

There are states all across America that allow permits to carry...lots of people have guns and they don't shoot each other if they are waiting on long lines and lose their patience - that's why its not the weapon it's the person operating it. Please don't tell me you're going to blame the store if he picked up the knife there. I this conversation today alone the mental health system, the family, the other patrons in the store, the judge, the cops and now the store itself are to blame....That's exactly what is wrong with our society - the only one to blame is the guy who stalked the stores then went in and tried to kill a complete stranger.

Jennifer

11:41 pm on Monday, January 21, 2013

@ Lasrnw: Ofcourse he was to blame. Pls do not assume I was placing blame on anyone besides the suspect. I was just wondering if he brought the knife from home or picked one up in the store. There are so many crazy people out there that if more were legally permitted to carry weapons, many more people would be harmed. And yes, many people do have guns and that is exactly why there are so so many shootings. Pls check your facts on how many shootings there are in the US annually.

I'm still not seeing how affordable housing has anything to do with this. Sure SOME people may have rental assistance but the property itself is not subsidized housing.. It's not state or federal funded. It is PRIVATELY owned in which the state of New Jersey holds the mortgage for the property. Before you go and say all people that come from low income housing are scum and come from scum or that anyone should be thanking anyone for subsidizing their housing please educate yourself on what you're talking about and don't pass judgement of everyone when you dont even know what you're talking about. It's obvious that this kid had something wrong with him. I don't believe it had anything to do with race. It was a very random act of violence that no person should have to witness or fall victim to. We are all faced with the same reality that this is what the world is coming to; random acts of violence, people stabbing innocent people, shooting up a school and killing innocent children and school faculty, and shooting up movie theaters full of innocent people just trying to see a movie. Still wanna tell me this had to do with the fact that this kid lived in affordable housing.. Please, get a reality check. Crime happens EVERYWHERE, and criminals come in all different types black, white, rich, poor it doesn't matter. That's reality

Considering my associates degree in criminal justice, I'm very well aware of the statistics regarding crime rates in low income areas. Trust me I am, and I'm not defending the kid that did this. I'm just looking for some kind of evidence proving that this specific crime had anything to do with affordable housing, besides the fact that this kid lives in what you people with your noses held up high call "low income housing."

Jennifer

Affordable housing, low income housing, rent subsidized housing etc. = lower rents. Yes it is a fact that there is more crime in lower income or poorer neighborhoods. Watch the news, read a paper, google it. Google the crime rate in Asbury Park and google the crime rate in Colts Neck or Spring Lake. Google a low income neighborhood in Harlem and google the upper east side. Noone is being racist, these are the facts. And yes crime does happen everywhere, but the crime rate is much higher in the lower income area.

Biased? Calling bad changes by having your "colors" changed in your town is not biased? People that don't agree with your position don't disagree with your statistics necessarily. What I, at least, am saying is that is bigotry and this was not a race/socio-economic crime. It was a crime committed by a mentally ill person. It does NOT matter what color he is, what town he lives in. He is insane...plain and simple. You are the one who is fixated on his color and "low income" and, what I gather is, should he have been white in lived in a nicer neighborhood...this wouldn't have happened? WRONG!

@Stacie Bohr - You're off base, I was simply stating that there is MORE crime in lower income neighborhoods plain and simple. The suspect could be white, black, yellow, brown and be wealthy, middle income or poor. He may educated or not. We realize that. He is psychologically impaired and should be confined for the remainder of his life. Rather than be judgmental read the comments prior to posting.

My earlier comment was rejected: Please consider, look at this critically and then comment. This past weekend a youngster from a good family perpetrated this terrible act: MURDERED 5 Family members.
But, family members say, Nehemiah Griego is no monster. They can't fathom what could have gone so terribly wrong.

"Whether it was a mental breakdown or some deeper undiagnosed psychological issue, we can't be sure yet," his uncle, former New Mexico state Sen. Eric Griego, said.
Tyrik Haynes desires the same consideration. Had he been admitted for Psych Evaluation after burning the cat this crime might not have occurred. Mental Illness affects all economic & ethnic groups.

Tyrik Haynes does not deserve anything but to go to prison for the remainder of his life. He knows right from wrong. He deserves NO consideration for what he put this woman, baby, husband and family through and what they will continue to battle for the remainder of their lives. If he did not he would have went on his merry way and lingered in the store rather than going straight home and hiding. This happened a little past 4p last Thursday and the police were at BB&B within minutes and at his home across the street. He was taken out of his home and placed in the back of the police car within 15 min of the stabbing.

He did it and should be [pick your description: punished or rehabilitated, or society should be able to pursue some retribution and/or deterrent]. There is evil in this world and ignoring or denying it won't make it go away. Instead of focusing on banning implements, how about promoting morals, ethics, civic responsibility - issues we've stripped from our schools because of some misguided attempt to appease a very small, but very vocal, minority and apply a twisted reading of our founding documents and the Constitution.

There are a lot of comments about low income housing on this forum, so I would like to give my 2 cent opinion. In my town we have insane taxes and a section of low income housing. A majority of this housing gets handed down to family members that do not need it. So if a single household with children get it (and obviously need it), years later when the housing is no longer needed, they hold on to it and pass it on to their kids that own fancy cars, sell drugs or rent it out for profit to illegals etc.... We have a whole section of drug addicts and prostitutes that live in them now, amongst all the hard working families with children that NEED low income housing. This type of housing needs to be seen as temporary and watched and checked on. It's amazing how hard working and TAX paying citizens are more monitored than the people that mooch off the system and abuse it. All you liberals are a joke, this nation is a mess. We have people that aspire to nothing and just have kids to collect welfare and create generations of low life's.

Reds, I agree with you. There are many available jobs but the people on welfare and collecting unemployment DON'T want to work. They actually get more handed to them that way. They will get reduced housing, food stamps and utility assistance. WHY WORK - they say. The difference here is middle income and high income people have to work to support their lifestyle. They do not qualify for assistance. Low income or no income that live in reduced housing, collecting welfare, food stamps etc. do not work. That is how they can collect from the state. For all the liberals out there that are definitely going to disagree. These are facts not opinions. Open up the paper, go on employment websites. There are jobs and all sorts of jobs. Please note that I am NOT saying that all people in reduced housing do not work. But the ones that are collecting and receiving assistance do not. That is the only way they are eligible. So before you retaliate and post, check your facts. I have already. PS - reduced housing - rentals, also do not pay taxes to their town. Owners of homes do pay taxes to their town.
