Matawan-Aberdeen Power Outages Down to 1,500 as Nor'easter Approaches

Thousands have had their power restored in the last few days, but some customers may have to wait out the Nor'easter in the dark.

More than 1,500 JCP&L customers in Matawan and Aberdeen are still without power after Hurricane Sandy left both communities in the dark nine days ago.

According to the JCP&L outage map, the number of customers without power has decreased to 870 customers in Aberdeen and 699 in Matawan as of 1:00 Wednesday afternoon. Only two days ago, 4,309 customers in Aberdeen and 3,004 customers in Matawan were without power.

A significant amount of electrical trucks from all over the country have been spotted in both Matawan and Aberdeen since Monday, however a nor'easter forecast to hit the area today into tomorrow threatens to slow down restoration with high winds, wet snow and tidal flooding.

Matawan Lt. Jason Gallo shared on the department's Facebook that the Main Street, Broad Street, and Orchard Street areas in the borough remain without power. According to Gallo, crews have advised him that recovery efforts face a possible delay until this weekend due to the storm.

In a press conference Wednesday morning in Long Beach Island, Gov. Chris Christie advised the state that power outages may even increase during the storm.

With the wintry weather moving into the area, warming stations were established at Ravine Drive Elementary School and Strathmore Elementary School. They will remain open until 10 p.m.

If you are in need of assistance, you may contact your police department. However, please remember that the police department cannot provide power outage information.

The Matawan Police Department can be contacted at: (732) 566-1010

The Aberdeen Township Police Department can be contacted at: (732) 566-2054

Tell us: Is your power back or are you still in the dark?

We still don't have power on Main street either....I heard that we are on the "Laurence Harbour Substation and we are waiting on them to rebuild the station. Not sure if that's the truth or just a rumor...and we all know JCP & L would never give us that type of information if that's true.

Does anyone know if the Aberdeen number mention in the article includes Cliffwood Beach? As far as I know no one there has power.

A few residents have commented on the Patch Facebook page that they have gotten power back on some streets in Cliffwood Beach. The Monmouth County half of Cliffwood Beach is included in Aberdeen Township.

Are they still working through the storm until it gets dangerous? Or are they just packing it up because of a couple of snow flakes. Laziness.

It's not laziness - per OSHA regulations if the winds get too high they HAVE to stop working, even if there's no precipitation.

Steve - I said will they work UNTIL it gets dangerous? It's my perception that the winds are not above OSHA standards yet, and they stopped working ANYWAY!

The midnight point section of cliffwood beach behind the public works is still a mess.. there are low wires, 2 cracked poles, and the beach area is a total mess- downed wires on the street and 6 or more broken poles - how long do those people have to wait? i drove by yesterday and it looked as if it wasnt touched..... THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE.......

Yuncong, I'm a resident there too. I follow Matawan Police Department on Facebook and they said we should have power by lunchtime today. The crew worked during the storm when than they weren't supposed to. The facebook post by Lt. Gallo said:

Power Update:
I just spoke with the workers from Ohio working on Main Street.
They advised me that their work will be complete tonight, but the final repair to the substation should be done early tomorrow, hopefully by lunch.

His map included Main Street, Broad Street, and Orchard Street.

These guys are up in high bucket trucks in the snow and wind.
Pray for their safety , as they could've called it quits for the night, but didn't.

I find those numbers hard to believe, especially when the I section area behind the Strathmore pool club is in the dark. Also, Irongate Lane hasn't been plowed. Do we really need to give JCP&L another excuse not to get the power on?
