Hazlet PD Running DWI Checkpoint on Rt. 36 Late Friday Night

Nine officers will man the DWI checkpoint at the Holy Family parking lot, between Poole and Union Avenues.

On Friday night, Hazlet Township Police, in conjunction with the Monmouth County DWI Task Force, will stop every vehicle traveling on Route 36 South near Holy Family Elementary school in an effort to weed out drunk drivers.

The hours of the checkpoint will be from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m.

According to Hazlet Police Lt. Al Lynch, this is the first time in 15 years the department is running a DWI checkpoint. "We applied for, and got a $4,000 grant to pay for the officers' overtime," said Lynch. Nine Hazlet officers and three Task Force officers will staff the checkpoint in the parking lot of the now-closed Holy Family Elementary School, between Poole and Union Aves.

"We'll pull vehicles into the lot, and basically give them a little education about DWI, hand them a flyer, screen them and send them on their way," said Lynch. He said there was not particular reason August 17 was chosen.

Under state regulations, a police department has to run a checkpoint in a systematic, fair manner, and inform the public in advance. Lynch said the Hazlet PD chose to pull over every driver. Other police departments may choose to pull aside every 10 cars; or stop every other car.

More revenue for Holmdel and Middletown on Rte 35 Friday Night....thanks Hazlet. If you don't think the other departments won't step up patrol at the same time you're mistaken.

Its a shame they are required to give this advance notice. I hope no one gets arrested for drunk driving , because drunk driving is selfish, stupid and deserves punishing. Keep up the good work Hazlet PD.

Its a shame what this country has become. Your driving along minding your business and you get stopped for nothing. (Daddy why are the Police stopping us , did we do something bad) Nice way to teach our kids to hate the Police. When I was a kid , Mommy & Daddy told us the Policeman was our freind if we are in trouble.Do the Police really need to stop every car . Get a %#% grip.. Not blameing the police, there just doing what there told or threatened with layoffs . The Citizens of this Country have complained to the point that we have lost many basic freedoms. Now these complaints have been turned around and used against those same citizens to generate revenue. Thanks alot freind

Hope they're able to put some drunk drivers out of commission. Is hazlet PD going to check on some of their own while they're at it?

Suspicion-less checkpoint to "reasonably" ask you to confess to a crime.
