Keyport Yacht Club Races for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

Club raises $55,000 for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

The Raritan Bay was dotted with boats as usual over the weekend for The Keyport Yacht Club's Bill Volk Leukemia Cup Regatta Races June 9-10. The club raised $55,000 for blood cancer research, beating last year's total of $48,000.

The 12th annual races will also be remembered for being the weekend that one of Keyport Yacht Club's own died after apparently falling from his boat in its mooring, sometime between Friday and Saturday night. An intense search for the 57-year old Savino Mazzilli of Morganville dominated the event after he was discovered missing late Saturday night. On Sunday, a massive search effort located gathered on the docks and in the water recovered his body. (See coverage on Patch.)

The fundraiser was held in partnership with The New Jersey chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Sailors in the regatta came from yacht clubs around the bay including Atlantic Highlands, Raritan and Manhattan. Over 30 boats were entered in the competition.
