Gov. Christie Loses His Cool at the Jersey Shore
The governor was caught on video berating a heckler on the Seaside Heights Boardwalk.
Maybe it's the summer heat.
Gov. Chris Christie can't seem to keep a lid on his temper these days.
For the second time in a week, Christie lost his cool in public.
While on vacation with his family in Seaside Heights on Thursday, Christie lashed out at a passerby on the Boardwalk, the Huffington Post reports. The passerby made a derisive comment about the governor's education policies, according to TMZ.com.
The video can be seen right here.
Last week, the governor berated a reporter during a press conference, after the reporter asked an off-topic question.
Despite the recent flare-ups, the Republican governor is considered a front-runner for the GOP vice-presidential nomination.

This guy is a total embarrassment to this State. He may have some good ideas about some things, and not so much about other things, but his attitude and temperament are horrendous. He is obnoxious if you don't agree with everything he says. His temperament makes his appearance even worse. He needs to go to anger management classes after he finds a nutritionist/holistic doctor to help him get healthy.

That video just cost him any position even close to the Whitehouse. He will now never be President or Vice President. People in NJ might put up with his behavior, but the rest of the nation won't. As for Christie's performance as a Governor, I'm not feeling it. Here's how to tell if he's effective in the future (if he's elected again) NJ is always on lists, such as "The states with the highest insurance premiums list" and NJ is always either first or second. When I see NJ being tenth on the list, then I know he's doing his job. Or maybe the "State with the highest property tax" list, we are always on the top of that one. When I see NJ listed as fifteenth on that list, then I know that Christie has been doing his job. So far, after four years in office we are still on the top of all those lists. What does that tell you?

To Brick
Just how would you have him lower auto insurance costs? By Fiat? How about saying how much can be charged for a loaf of bread or that six pack? Government can't control or determine pricing of private companies unless you want to nationalize them (another great idea?) or marshal law. Get real, with the densest state in the country (maybe he can order people out of the state) we have a very large number of accidents, not to mention the insurance fraud that is fueled by the ambulance chasers.

Just like Rudy Guillani and Donald Trump, when they are offended in the slightest or you don't agree with them, they throw a fit and start name calling and that's why they will never get in to the White House. Chris Christie is an embarrassment to himself, his family, and to our state because of his lousy attitude. I get why he got upset, but just about everyone has a camera phone and what would just be a local incident with a few witnesses is now available to everyone on the planet if they feel like checking out on the internet. Chris Christie represents our state and he's held to a higher standard, so he should and more importantly, is EXPECTED to act accordingly. If he doesn't like it, then he should step down from public office.

The proper response for a leader would be to stay above the fray and respond maturely, but Christie loves to get into the weeds whenever the opportunity presents itself. On the radio, he will sometimes speak to needing to work together, but it's become apparent that all that is is rhetoric. Christie is part of the Limbaugh generation that declares anyone who thinks differently than they is an enemy of the state and should be ridiculed, mocked and shunned.

People write about politicians as if they are god like and put them on a pedestal. To me they are employees of the state just like teachers are, except they play by their own rules which most of the rules were made by the politicians for their own benefit. When you start treating them as if they are employees instead of some kind of royalty, you will see a change in them. I find it laughable that people will stand behind a politician no matter what they do just because they are a Republican or Democrat instead of looking at the person for the job performance they were hired to do. People will stand behind Christie because their father was a republican as was his father before him, or they would stand behind Corsine even though he was killing the state just because he was a Democrat and so was the voters father and his father before him. What a crock of shit, time to start rating these people for their job performance and not this political game they all like to play. I was part of the majority the hired Christie to run the state, so far I give him a D- and will not rehire him after his contract runs out. Time to find a better and more efficient employee.

And the reporter he called an idiot last weekend was in fact an idiot. They press were told that he was only discussing the water situation not anything else. If he chose to ask an off topic question then he deserved to be called out on it. Why does every conversation about Christie always end up coming back to his weight? No, he's the President, and he actually acts the part. Gov Christie has chosen to be a public official, he is very over weight, so you think people are not going to call him out on that? Cmon, part of being a public official, and this man didn't call him fat just made a comment about taking care of teachers. Christie is the one who needs to grow up. Last point is, I can ensure you he wouldn't be quite so "tough" if he didn't have his security detail with him, an overweight middle aged man will get himself hurt pretty good acting as he did in that video.

The point of a free press is to ask whatever questions they think important, not the agenda the politician sets. That why the Constitution, in the very first amendment, secures the right of a free press. The Founders thought it necessary to not abridge the freedom of the press for the precise reason activated in that exchange. You may be awed of the majesty of Christie, but the press should not be. The reporter was right; the Governor was wrong.
Then, as to why everything comes back to his weight: Well, people are obese either due to a medical problem, or a psychological problem. He apparently does not have a medical problem, so there's something not quite right in his relationship to food, or his relationship to his body. His own mind/body relationship is unhealthy. That says a great deal about him.

Christie has no self-control and he thinks he's entitled to whatever his little heart desires. From the helicopter, when he said he didn't think it was that important, to his extremely poor handling of the power outages caused by Hurricane Irene to his mishandling of alternative energy to his dreadful policies on education to his veto of the proposed tax on millionaires (who fill his election coffers) he's a dreadful disappointment. simple truth his reaction was uncalled for. last I checked this country has something called freedom of speech. and this was just one of many of his outbursts. he called a reported an idiot because his question was off subject. he seems to go into a defensive posture when ever someone speaks the truth. I personally am glad he went off. I think he just ruined any shot he may have had for the white house. He would be trying to bully other countries.

Don't we have an anti-bullying law/? I know we have one as far as schools. What about politicians? When someone is in the spotlight, whether a politician or a person of the media, one has to expect criticism. It is better to be gracious than it is to be a bully. This upsets me because we should be setting good examples for our young people.

Not up to anyone else...stop trying to pass the buck! Hold yourself accountable for your own children! Take a look at movies, TV, radio stations, books, education systems, jobs, etc....teach your children right and they will make it...anywhere!

Why don't we get rid of the pension system for the 1% and give the money taxpayers pay in state, county and local taxes to middle class tax relief? Seriously why are 99% of taxpayers who are hurting paying for pensions for the 1%. We would be able to save BILLIONS! Let's put it to a vote and see once and for all who wants to pay taxes for pensions for the 1% who work for government

He is a bully, plain & simple. That people applaud his behavior is mind boggling to me, & is further example of the decline of the use & acceptance of mannerly behavior in our society. Even if the person was acting like a jerk, Christie should have enough sense & decorum to either a) not take the bait, or b) try to have a reasoned discussion to explain his positions. Instead, Gov. Christie engages in behavior regularly exhibited on Fox News. He is an embarassment to our state, & considering our reputation, that is saying something- & it's not good.

How are pensions bankrutping the state? Over the past 17 years, the state has put almost nothing into the pension fund while the teachers have put in billions of their own money over that same period of time. The money that should have gone into the pension fund was used to give tax breaks to millionaires and to balance the budget. So you have not been paying for the teachers' pensions. If you think teachers' pensions are so great, then become a teacher for 25 plus years. Oh those terrible teachers who brought the economy down in 2008. What is your solution to the billions we keep putting on the backs of hard working NJ residents? More taxes for pensions for a select few union members? Get a 401k like the rest of us.
BTW the Teachers Pension is not funded locally at all. It's all buried in the belly of the state budget beast. If OC got rid of its pension, it would save $4 million a year. Tax RELIEF!!

The source of your arch-conservative dogma, Whiny, is "AEI" (American Enterprise Institute). So far right that it has zero credibility, except on Fixed News.
When Obama took office, Bush's Wall St. and bank crash was just starting to kill jobs. That spring was when corporations (and their "1%" honchos) laid off millions of working people.
Yet AEI still wants the politicians in its pocket to give tax breaks to the 1%, oil companies, offshore job outsourcers, hedge-fund dabblers, etc.

My feeling is that he is very unprofessional. When he called the reporter an idiot, it was totally unnecessary. Yes, he said he was only answering questions about the water situation, but reporters ALWAYS, and I mean ALWAYS, try to get something extra if they can. It's their job to ask questions. Sometimes they luck out and get an answer. It certainly didn't hurt him to try and it certainly didn't deserve the response from Christie. All he had to do was politely decline to answer the question. The same goes for his response to the guy who said something about taking care of the teachers. Was it so horrible a comment that he couldn't just ignore it and keep walking? He is a politician, so he really needs to learn how to deal with these situations a little better or get out of politics. This is just my opinion.

The voters and the Citizens of NJ have every right in the World to ask this or any Governor any question they want to ask him______Since the Governor is paid by and working for ALL of the people of NJ. If he cannot respond in a civilized manner ___instead of acting like a no class Ghetto level thug to a question_____or to an opinion of someone else____then he should ignore the question.
All teachers and state workers have every right in the World to be upset because the State on NJ STOLE the workers money that is deducted from the workers salaries and paid into the pension fund. If any bank stole your money out of you bank account and told you sorry your money is gone and you have to put more money into your savings account__you would have a right to be upset also.
Suppose you asked your mailman a question and he ran at you screaming as Christie did and needed 2 State Troopers to restrain him???? You would be calling the Postmaster and telling him to fire the mailman.

Wow, can't believe how this board lit up with the brilliant thoughts of the conservative minds in the area. Still don't get it Somuchtosay, your last post to me is exactly my point. 3M didn't leave because they were about to go bankrupt, they left so they could make many more millions then they were already making. And the kicker is they found some hard working saps to do it for a fraction of what you used to make. Do you get it yet? You can hate unions all you want, and by the way if your husband is soooo unhappy at his union job, maybe he should quit and let somebody else enjoy the salary and benefits that the unions negotiated on his behalf. You are the typical unhappy and underpaid worker in this country. You blaim everything on the unions, when it is the unions who set the mark for american workers. When the economy goes in the sh*tt*r the blame always goes on the workers, union and non-union. Never do the people who mismanaged the money at the top take any of the responsibility for the havoc they reap. Just blame the workers they are the greedy ones, they are hurting our bottom line. Gimme a break, do you think there lifestyle changes when gas goes up a buck or two, not at all, but ours does. As for Whiny, I actually enjoy some of your comments, it seems like in another life you could actually be a pretty intelligent person, NOT...lol

When an elected official relies on thuggery versus integrity, the result is Chris Christie.
Barack Obama's fondest hope should be that Mr. Romney selects the short-fused Mr.Christie as his running mate. He will be of similar value to Mitt as Ms. Palin was to Mr. McCain.
It is truly a shame. Chris Christie has great potential. However, his bankruptcy of people skills will be the leading reason for his never progressing beyond Trenton.

To everyone who is supporting Gov. Chrisite on his childish outburst I say watch the video of it.' He ran towards the passerby in a menacing manner. He engaged in disorderly conduct and was screaming in public. The State Troopers had to restrain him or he may have assaulted the passerby.
Now suppose you went into your local bank branch and said 'hey you guys screwed up my checking account' and the person you spoke to at the bank branch lost his cool and blew up and ran towards you in a menacing manner screaming at you?

Governor Christie is a refreshing change to political sterotypes. The education community dislikes him because they can not bully him. They were asked to pay a mere 2% of their gross salaries for healthcare. They acted like children. The governor suggested unioin dues be waived to help pay for the health care. Well the biggest bully of all - the leaders of the NJ Teachers Union - vehemently opposed that. Government spending and lucartive pension packages can no longer be supported by a weakend private sector. That is the reality of TODAY. Pay your fiar share and accept it and then you will have a better image with the public. Joe

This crap about cursing in front of his kids--Give me a break! If he was just walking down the boardwalk and happened to hear someone curse at some one else would he have been so upset because it was within earshot of his kids? Because I am sure walking down the boardwalk of Seaside he heard plenty of curse words. That's such a flimsy excuse. He is a hot head and I have no doubt he does a lot of cursing in front of his kids himself. His reaction was a far worse example to set for his kids if that's his excuse for overreacting--AGAIN! Develop a tougher skin or get out of politics if you can't handle it when someone doesn't agree with you or doesn't stay "on topic" or, God forbid, heckles you!

You should all grow up and be thankful we have someone like Gov Christy in there.. or else this state would be down the tubes by now if Corzine or Florio or McGreevy were still in office.. they ruined this state.. The passerby cursed at the governor? Really, the reports said that he made a snide remark and what was quoted was not a curse word at all. So far as I can tell, there was no cursing at all. This is just one incident in a long line of incidents of Christie being a loud mouthed crude bully. If it were just this one time and one incident, then who would care. Joe at 8:59 AM makes some totally uninformed comments about teachers and the NJEA. Christie wants to hand our successful NJ public school system over to charter schools and school vouchers. He wants to force charter schools down the throats of districts that don't even want them and to hand over public money to private schools and religious schools. He accuses the NJEA of being thugs while he is the real thug. Christie was a lobbyist for the for profit Edison charter schools which were a flop.

Just because is not acting like every other politician does NOT mean he is real- it means he is not suited to hold public office. His short temper and bullying tactics are not qualities most people want in a politician. Might seem like "a breath of fresh air", but this guy cannot control his temper. He is not "saying it the way it is", he has no self- control. All you need to do is look at the guy's physique to see that... and yes- him being obese, being in a position of power and acting like a bully are valid points- he has a LOT of emotional baggage which he is displaying each time he rants and raves in public.

Laura

I didn't know Christie was a northeastern liberal. Mean, nasty and intolerant all terms that define Christie. Don't allow facts to get in the way of your opinions. Christie is a classless bully. That doesn't mean I believe unions are all honorable. Doesn't mean I don't think something needs to be done about double and triple dippers (which Christie seems to be leaving alone in Ocean County - e.g. Acropolis)
A bully is a bully. Cuomo in NY is getting things done without the classless diatribes that Christie employs. Christie keeps the "jersey shore" mentality alive.
But, hey, that's just my opinion.

Instead of using this comment section to vent over all your political views all of you should be looking at what actually happened. He was out with his children and a heckler started following them and insulting him with profanity in front of them. That goes over the line no matter who is on the receiving end. I would guess that few of you would be very tolerant if it was you in front of your kids on the receiving end of this kind of bullying. The heckler and many of you need to lose the reality TV mentality and exercise a little common sense and respect to a Dad out with his kids. The person doing the heckling should be ashamed of doing this to children. This is not about politics but common decency. There is a place and time for everything. This was neither!

What about belittling the reporter who asked the "off topic" question. What was his excuse for that? Oh that's right, he is superior and can treat people any way he wants. Totally unnecessary. I'm sure a bunch of "Men in Black" Secret Service agents would have tackled the heckler and arrested him as a terrorist.

The reporters were told before the press conference that it was only about one topic. As I remember President Obama did something similar when a White House reporter asked an "off-topic" question.

I dont think he did anything wrong at all, and as far as I'm concerned he has done a lot to help this state. I'm proud to have him as our governer and I hope he doesn't leave anytime soon. Cody, I agree with you 100%. Think of the past 5-6 Governors we have had. Christie is trying to clean up a "broken" system that has gone on for years.
And whats wrong what he did on the boardwalk. Some meathead cursed at him while he was with his family on the boardwalk. He did what any other father would have done. And what was so terrible what he said? I didn't hear any curse words. Some of you people have to wake up and smell the coffee. Christie is fed up with the good old boy network and the crazy taxes we have to pay in this state. Most retires will have to move away because they won't be able to afford living here in the Garden State.
Rufus O'Callahan
6:18 pm on Saturday, July 7, 2012
Christie is part of the "good old boy" network. He was hired by George W. Bush to be U.S. Attorney. He had the entire NJ GOP establishment back him up against the infinitely more qualified Steve Lonegan for Governor. He has endorsed the establishment darling Mitt Romney for President and Joe Kyrillos for U.S. Senate. Just because he talks tough doesn't make him any different. Don't be fooled - the man is part of the solution, not part of the problem. The people who helped create this mess are his allies.
Cathrine Smith

exactly he is trying to clean up the mess he was giving, so back off people give him a break, any one of us would have said that reporter was an idiot for asking a question he was told not to ask, and if Chrisitie had ignored him you all would be saying he is dodging the issues, as for the guy on the Boardwalk my husband would have gone off on him to using that language in front of my kids.

Christie isn't cleaning up anything. He hires unqualified political hacks to cushy government jobs at the Pork & Turnpike Authorities, where tolls hikes approved by Christie took effect because of their blatant mismanagement of the money they take in. His lawyer friends, David Samson & Bill Baroni, have no civil engineering or economic knowledge, and thus have no clue what they're doing. Now he's passed the biggest budget in New Jersey history, three years after he campaigned on cutting spending. Like every other Governor this state has had in recent history, he has no intentions of improving the business climate or making it more affordable to live here. This will keep happening as long as you keep electing establishment types in both parties who put party loyalty and helping out their cronies over doing what's best for the state time and time again. If you want real change in this state, elect someone like Steve Lonegan instead.

Maybe he should start with himself and his brother who should be behind bars. Nice to have a brother as an Attorney General and friends with one in NY. Any one else would be in jail for a long time. Even if you agree that Christie has often been right in trying to clean up some of the political patronage and public employee excesses, the fact remains he all too often exhibits the behavior of a neighborhood bully at best or a cheap thug at worst. It is not necessary - especially when you're right about something - to demean someone who sees things differently. This kind of immaturity makes him unsuited for re-election, much less as a candidate for Vice President.

I highly doubt that man was the only person to shout out to him that day & perhaps that was just the straw that broke the camel's back. And yes, as a public official there are expectations of your accessibility, but when the man is trying to enjoy an ice cream cone with his kids? The Republican governors did the same thing in Fl,Oh.and Wi for political reasons(to stall economic recovery and make Obama look bad).
California has taken advantage of this money and will put people to work on real jobs that pay real wages to have a high speed rail between LA and SF. This will increase commerce, disposable income, and tax revenue.

Sadly, this puerile behavior will score points with his base and a handful of so-called independents. I, for one, hope he physically throttles someone. Then again, nothing would happen then, either. How do I know? Conservative Court Justices can choke other judges and get off, so why not a governor? To all of you posting negative comments about the Govvernor's character, not favoring teachers, cops or middle class, and just down-right being a bully. How about realizing that this Governor did not create the problems in our State. I believe that his integrity and conscience compels him to try to fix the problems. Perhaps he doesn't shower euphemisms on us, but that is not why he was elected. He was elected to solve the problems in our State. How many of you voted him for Governor and re-elected the same state representatives/senators? I believe many of you because I see many of the same names in our state legislature that have been there for years. Is it any wonder why he has to fight, fight, and fight to get anything fixed. My point being that we need to vote for representatives who best represent our views, too and not just passively vote for someone because of their name. As far his being against teachers, how is the man supposed to act when a teachers' union prays for his death? As far as not favoring middle class, for crying out loud, he is trying to cut tax-costing projects. Yes, he did turn away federal money for a project, that would have cost us taxpayers more money. As far as the posting about California's transportation project, how about realizing that CA has the largest state deficit in the country. We are trying to balance our books here, but CA keeps spending more. I ask you: What do you want from our Governor? Just my opinion.
Gene
12:09 pm on Sunday, July 8, 2012
Oldsoldier....
Deficits are not cut by giving tax breaks to the uber rich on the backs of the middle class and the poor. During Eisenhower's term, our debt/GDP ratio was 127% because of the war,it is now somewhere between 80-90%. Eisenhower put people back to work by building highways, bridges, tunnels, water treatment systems etc. The result was a period of prosperity for the middle class in the 50's and 60's because of demand generated by disposable income. You say balance the budget on the backs of the middle class so that the out of touch uber rich can get more tax advantages?
If want to get the economy going ,you need to put more money in the pockets of people who spend it here and not put it in Swiss bank accounts. 99% of all Democratic jobs bills were filibustered by Republicans in the Senate for political purposes using our deficit(thanks to 2 unfunded wars,an unpaid for tax cut and prescription medicare part d plan)as an excuse. This is while they still want to give more tax breaks to the so called 'job creators' who have have the highest disparity of income since 1929. California has the smarts right now to be forward thinking, while NJ has a hot air balloon that you can see on you tube.
Your right about voting habits, that's why Ocean Cty should purge itself from the corrupt Republican corporate puppets along with the rest of the state.

@OldSoldier: I agree, he didn't choose the mess he inherited. Neither did Obama, by the way, but the Right won't accept that argument.
Christie does, however, CHOOSE, time and time again, to resort to threats and name-calling. He LIED (http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2012/04/gov_christie.html) about financials related to the huge tunnel project. He was part of the mess (http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2010/08/error_on_race_to_the_top_appli.html) that led to forfeiting almost HALF A BILLION DOLLARS in education aid.
I could hold my nose and deal with the fact that Christie is a boor if he actually delivered amazing results (thought that would not entirely excuse the bully behavior). But he doesn't. And now he's playing games with the budget (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/28/opinion/krugman-fiscal-phonies.html and http://www.njspotlight.com/stories/12/0625/0100/).

The teachers are paying more towards their pensions, healthcare, and the problem isn't "fixed". It is now fully Chrisies fault - HE HAS NOT DONE HIS PART - he promised to fix the pensions by funding the states share. How soon we forget - but the teachers will be blamed for his wrongdoing unless the union makes this information well known. Google it in the meanwhile.

To Gene - Please allow me to refine your historical lesson here. You should look back to Hoover and the Tennesse Valley Authority. He tried different projects to get us out of the Great Depression. You are correct that different government funded infrastructure projects were created. However, they were done between Hoover, FDR, Truman and Eisenhower. And those projects did not get us out of the deficits we incurred, but the wisdom during that era gave us an infrastructure that is still used today. It was the Baby Boom, that allowed the marketplace created jobs to manufacture so many products during that time. Certainly Federal budgets have had surplus and deficits during different Presidents, but look to those congressional appropriations over the decades. As far as the "uber rich" getting the breaks, who do you think the uber rich are? Look at some of the congressmen and women and tell me if the Pelosi's and Reid's are "middle class"? I don't want the point to get lost though, that we all should aspire to become as rich as possible, it is the American Dream.
Gene
12:42 am on Monday, July 9, 2012
Yes, EVERYONE should have the same opportunity to get rich and play by the same set of rules. When was the last time you were allowed to keep your money offshore? When was the last time that we had such a disparity between rich and poor? Does 1929 ring a bell?
Baby boomers got us out of what?
Wisdom of that era? Yeah, we didn't have tea baggers in congress who represent only corporate interests.
Pelosi and Reid have money, not as much as ISSA, but so what? Bill Gates has money,so good for him.
Romney got his money by VULTURE CAPITALISM. It's okay that he would let middle class workers be without jobs so that he could make money?
The American Dream will be lost by the fallout of the Citizen's United supreme court ruling. This 2 faced politician is the poster child for the plutocracy that this can create.
This type of person wants to get rich but also be a deferment queen during the Vietnam era while he only talked the talk. His type doesn't care about the'commons' that we all share i.e. clean air ,water, food safety, etc as long as HE makes money.
The WISDOM OF THIS ERA is that Obama sees the need for roads, bridges, internet improvement, high speed rail, etc and your party doesn't.
What makes it different this time? You sound like a hypocrite.

The Baby Boom following WWII (families), became the force that caused demands for products, thus domestic manufacturing (not the government spending war machine). But I'm sure you already knew that. Yes 1929, and earlier years do ring a bell. Since you believe the Pelosi's and the Reid's are not as rich as the Romney's, do you have a number for how rich a person is allowed to get before they are "uber"? Or is it the Swiss accounts that ruffle your feathers? You say you want everyone to have the opportunity to get rich, but how do you expect that with the highest tax rates in our history? You live in NJ, I know you understand that, you are as much a victim as I and everyone else is, unless you don't want to work (and have your hand out). How did Obama get his millions? As I have tried to make the point in other posts, it doesn't matter who is President if we the people keep voting for the same people in Congress that share the blame for our economic mess, and vice versa. I don't tout Issa as some sort of political hero (I didn't vote for him and he does not represent me). I don't believe the Pelosi's and Reid's care about our interests either, only their constituents and their own political careers. As far as "vulture capitalism" goes, do you think China is using that on us? Think about it. I wish to engage in civil discussion here, not name calling, I wish you could do the same.I would rather have you understand how I believe our lack of proper voting is destroying us.

The amazing thing is that no one seems to direct any criticism at someone verbally harassing a father in front of his kids while on vacation! The sad truth is that most people here seem to have lost the most basic respect for family values and children's time with their parents. This was not a political venue but family time. How many of you would want a neighbor or co worker who didn't like something you did following you around in public trying to embarrass you is front of your kids?!?!? I understand, to a point, the reporter slanting the headlines and descriptions to sell his story but am deeply disturbed by the lack of compassion of the average person commenting on this. Make no mistake, the attack was directed as much to his children as to him because of the way and place it was done. You don't think the children were upset and hurt by this? Such a big strong man to attack children! I don't care if it is a Republican or Democrat, Christie of Obama, you don't attack anyone in front of their kids! There is a time and place for everything and this was neither. Drop all the political rhetoric and you will see that the harasser was so wrong on so many levels and it is he who deserves your wrath.

But after 32 years my eyes were opened. I saw first hand how slackers got the same pay as me. I saw workers who should have been fired fall back on the union for protection. Worse, I saw administrators not even try to fire or discipline a worker because of all the worker "protections". I saw my union ALLWAYS support the Dem no matter what. Rick
3:41 pm on Monday, July 9, 2012
The point I was making about not using capital letters in appropriate places is that it shows a lack of education.
NOW, could you tell us how a president leads "this country into a booming economy"? Taxing the public and buying lots of American products? That did work 70 years ago when the government bought lots and lots of American built planes, ships, tanks and guns. That was what got us out of the 'Great Depression'.
Solyndra didn't go belly up because of foreign competition. They did that by spending a $535 million federal loan on a really fancy office building with, among other things, digital temperature gauges on the shower heads in the executive washrooms.
If Chinese competition was such a factor maybe the Obama administration should have imposed high traiffs on them before loaning Solyndra all that taxpayer money, not nine months after Solyndra went bankrupt.

I read all of these comments and am seeing New Jersey is just like the whole country. Everyone is divided mostly down political lines; they are entrenched in their view without common ground for compromise. How did we get like this? The Gov had to do hard things to try to keep the state solvent; as a Dem I had tough time accepting some of the things he has done, but on the other hand, he stepped into a real mess as did President Obama. If the Republicans ever win back the White House it could very well be Gov. Christie, who could do it.

As far as some of the comments about the poor teachers just what is so bad about what he is trying to do? End years of tax roll abuses by the teachers unions? Gee that is terrible he is looking out for my tax dollars! Get real folks and stop buiying into union propaganda when they tell you its for your kids. Stop making excuses for him, the guy is a jerk, he thinks he's a tough guy, it's his act and it work's with some people...he wouldn't be such a tough guy if he didn't have a security detail. I as well cannot wait to vote for him as well! Yes I did say he has a right to respond that way and it is actually refreshing to see a politician to say what he feels and what he thinks. If you think that just b/c a man/woman are a public servant they should be harassed at will you all are greatly mistaken. Public servants should have the same rights to privacy as anyone else. Criticizing a man while he is with his family and on vacation is unacceptable. If you do not agree with his policy's or management your opinion can be freely expressed through the ballot box. BTW Mattie respect goes both ways and he is not a bully please look up a definition for a bully before labeling someone. As far as his economic policies that you are referring to I don't think that he has done enough to get rid of the union choke hold on our state. Interestingly enough when did it become un-American to be wealthy? Wait I know it is when this country decided to put an ultra liberal in the White House that wants to tax us to prosperity and distribute the wealth among the people so those that make it can give it away. Be honest with yourselves if you were in the top 10%, 5%, or 1% how different would your rhetoric be?

Michael Mirkin, so people shouldn't say things to Gov Christie because his family is around, but it's OK for right wing to consistently bring the President's race into play? Do you complain about this or is that fair game because of your politics. Politics aside Christie is just a jerk, that's what he is. I don't think he's a bad Gov, do think he is a pompous jerk!

obesity is not always about overeating, it is a thyroid condition, diabetes, medication which IALL fat soluble and have the side effect of weight gain... overeating is only one cause among many. a real fact of life is we can eat healthy excersice and be in perfect health and a perfect weight.... then go outside, use our perfectly working bodies to cross the street and get run over by a truck..... fat or skinny we are dead . why dojnt we just appreciate each other while we can.

Wow 500 plus comments from mean to friendly, from on topic to ludacris. What I take from this article is a public servant such as Gov Christie needs to be thick skinned. Those of us that live in the state have every right to agree or disagree with his politics but name calling and personal slurs only reflect on us all in a negative way. I know I am over the top with idealism, but it all starts with us and what we want from our politicians.

When will the people of New Jersey realize this guy hasn't done anything for the state except pass the buck down to the townships. His idea of leadership is to have someone else deal with the problems of the state and point the finger at the people who work for the state. How convenient, that way he has more time to work on feeding his fat face and yelling at people who dare ask him a question. This guy is just another reincarnation of Joe McCarthy, a bully who will burn himself out as soon as the people of New Jersey wake up and come to terms with what he is really all about. If the economy hadn't been so bad due to 8 years of war this fat man would still be in the prosecutors office where his temperament was more effective and more appropriate. He has no business on the office he is currently holding he doesn't have the temperament for the job and his idea of leadership is leading the line at the buffet.

That's not loosing "cool" its call fortitude toward the excellent policies Mr. Christie has put I place. People say it’s a “teachers” issue but that’s not the problem, it an administrative issue. How many assistant principals do we need, how many assistant superintendents do we need. It an absurd number in most school districts. If these so called managers were reduced in numbers there would be much more resources for “teachers.” I support Governor Christie 100%

I agree with Kevin. It was actually Joe Wilson, congressman from SC, who yelled, "You lie" during Obama's speech. Joe Walsh is the GOP congressman from Illinois who is running against the Democrat Tammy Baldwin who lost both her legs in Iraq. Joe Walsh has been saying vicious stupid things about this woman. He complains that she supposedly talks too much about her service in Iraq. How dare Tammy lose both her legs in Iraq, how dare she! If anything, Walsh is worse than Wilson, if such a thing is possible. It's CC's pattern of acting like a classless thug that is the problem not just what happened at the Jersey shore.

John, I am not sure how you extrapolated from my post that I am calorie challenged as I am not sure why a personal attack was necessary considering the forum. But then again I can assume from your post that you are probably one of those people that judge folks on the size of their waist line rather their accomplishments and stature. BTW you do not pay anymore for healthcare than just because we have overweight people in our society. What causes insurance premiums to escalate are frivolous lawsuits, unreasonable regulation, and fraud. Interestingly enough none of those things are addressed in the new health mandate. One last thing the pother week Mr. Christie had reprimand a reporter for not staying on point perhaps you should do the same.

John, again try and stay on point of this article. I know it must be difficult. John, Remember that we still live in America a free nation and individual choice should be respected. Overweight people should not be used as scapegoats for a broken medical system. I will agree that we do have an obesity issue in this country but if you look at statistics obese people contribute less than 1% of overall medical spending in this country that is directly related to their weight. Frivolous litigation is not a right wing rhetoric do you remember Mr and Mrs. Clinton's plan (or are they right wing) for medical overhaul? Number one item in the plan was to restructure how and when a medical practitioner can be sued and remedies for cost recovery in case a plaintiff losses. Well guess what got squashed really fast by the trial lawyers association. Just like the taxation of Cadillac health plans buy the UNIONS.

ABSENT WITHOUT LEAVE (AWL).Ever notice how much time our illustrious Governor Lard is out of New Jersey campaigning and making political speeches for the Republican Party? It seems to me that this poor excuse for a governor is out of state when he should be in Trenton performing his job as Governor; or he is on vacation in places like Disneyland or at the Jersey Shore in places like Belmar or Seaside. And while he is cavorting to and fro, the state of NJ is in a shambles. We have the highest rate of unemployment and an inordinate number of fiscal problems; problems like a one billion dollar shortfall, crumbling infrastructure, the second highest taxes in the nation and more. I ask you, suppose you were absent from your job as mush as our governor is from his job, how long would it be before your boss gave you a pink slip? Suppose you were constantly away from your job on interviews or promoting some special interest groups while your work was piling up; how long would you be employed? How long would your company absorb the cost of your salary while you were ‘away’ from your job? Come the next election I believe it is time that we the tax payers of NJ give him the pink-slip.

Excuse me, but your statement is so bizarre and inane that it is ridiculous. Do you think that union people don't pay taxes? Do you think that you are better than union people or ordinary working people, union or non-union? Teachers, police and firefighters (professional or volunteer) work very hard, they DO pay taxes. Please spare me the nonsense about the supposed Cadillac health care and pension plans of public sector workers. They pay for these benefits, it's called delayed compensation. Joe R - Truth is hard to accept but the union healthcare and retirement benefits are bankrupting municipalities and states one after another. That is undeniable and even a union lover like you cannot argue that point. BTW how do you define ordinary working people? Do you mean to tell me that because I am educated and hold a white color job I don't work very hard? Deferred compensation? I pay for my healthcare at 50%, (vs. an average union member under 5%) or that my pension is a 401K that does not saddle taxpayers with an economic liability that is unsustainable, and that I have to manage and make sure it last me a life time in retitrement. If you object to the term Cadillac plan than why did the unions like AFL-CIO exploded with anger when Obama suggested it? I know why they felt that. if they were going to spend over a billion dollars in political contributions between 2005 and 2011 they deserve to keep things status quot. I just hope that Mr. Christie would implement the same policy as Gov. Walker of Wisconsin.
Joe R

Ha, ha, ha. 401K, good luck with that. It probabaly won't be there when you retire or it will lose 50% in value. Is that far fetched? No, because that is what is happening to current retirees with 401Ks. 401Ks were never designed to be a replacement for pensions, they were designed to be a SUPPLEMENT to a regular pension. Of course private companies are abandoning pensions for these phoney baloney 401K lootery (lottery) bogus plans. Maybe you will be lucky but more probably your 401k will be worthless when you retire. This is not a rare event, millions of people have been shafted by their 401k plans. Meanwhile Social Security pays its benefits on time for 77 years. Oh, let me guess, you probably hate SS, too. It's all part of the right wing propaganda garbage. If not for SS, millions of seniors would be out in the gutter. The payments may not be great but it is dependable unlike a 401k.
Rick
7:52 pm on Tuesday, July 10, 2012
Social Security was never intended to be a replacement for pensions either.
And it hasn't been paying out for 77 years. The first SS recipient, Ida May Fuller received her first check in February 1940.
http://www.ssa.gov/history/imf.html
The original purpose of Social Security was to get the government more money for programs to try to pull the country out of the depression. Of course the life expectancy in 1940 was 63.6 years. In 2010 life expectancy was up to 78.2 years.
The employee contribution at the time was one half of one percent on the first $3000 of income. That would be a maximum of $15 a year.
Twenty or so years later when more people under Social Security started retiring and living longer the rates and maximum had to be raised to cover the increased payments. And rates and maximums keep increasing.

To Joe R: Where are the "millions of people who have been shafted by their 401k plans?" Where do you get this fairy tale from? I can't even suspect any news media would be the source of that information, because it's pretty much made up. The only people who may be losing on their retirement accounts will be the public unions and govt. employees who've been riding the unsustainable taxpayer funded pension gravy train for too long..
Joe R

From Time Magazine 10-9-09:
The ugly truth, though, is that the 401(k) is a lousy idea, a financial flop, a rotten repository for our retirement reserves. In the past two years, that has become all too clear. From the end of 2007 to the end of March 2009, the average 401(k) balance fell 31%, according to Fidelity. The accounts have rebounded, along with the rest of the market, but that's little help for those who retired — or were forced to — during the recession. In a system in which one year's gains build on the next, the disaster of 2008 will dent retirement savings long after the recession ends.
In what must seem like a cruel joke to many, the accounts proved the most dangerous for those closest to retirement. During the market downturn, the 401(k)s of 55-to-65-year-olds lost a quarter more than those of their 35-to-45-year-old colleagues. That's because in your early years, your 401(k)'s growth is driven mostly by contributions. You control your own destiny. But the longer you hold a 401(k), the more market-exposed it becomes. It's a twist that breaks the most basic rule of financial planning.
Joe R
7:48 pm on Tuesday, July 10, 2012
More from that Time article: The Society of Professional Asset-Managers and Record Keepers says nearly 73 million Americans, or just under 50% of our working population, now have a 401(k). And collectively we pour more than $200 billion into these accounts each year. But retire rich? Don't bet on it. The average 401(k) has a balance of $45,519. That's not retirement. That's two years of college. Even worse, 46% of all 401(k) accounts have less than $10,000. Today, just 21% of all U.S. workers are covered by traditional pensions, and the number shrinks every year. "The time may have come to consider returning 401(k) plans to their original position as a third tier of retirement planning, behind pensions and Social Security," says Alicia Munnell, who heads the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College. "They should not be the thing we rely on for retirement security." And the government seems to agree. This summer, the Government Accountability Office concluded, "If no action is taken, a considerable number of Americans face the prospect of a reduced standard of living in retirement." That's what is known as an understatement.

From the 60 Minutes web site 3-23-10:
The effects of the current economic crisis have touched everyone. Even if you still have a good job and a paid up mortgage, chances are your monthly 401(k) statement will remind you that you've lost a good chunk of your savings.
Trillions of dollars have evaporated from those accounts that have become the prime source of retirement funds for a majority of American workers, affecting their psyche and their future. If you are still young enough, there's time to rebuild and recover, but if you are in your 50s, 60s or beyond the consequences can be dire, and its drawing attention to the shortcomings of a retirement system that has jeopardized the financial security of tens of millions of people.
[snip]
The saddest part of this story is that it is being repeated all over the country. In eastern Pennsylvania, 59-year-old Iris Hontz lost her accounting job and half of her 401(k) investments. She's now back in the workforce as a part-time cashier in a grocery store.
In Dearborn, Mich., Terry and Donna McNally are barely holding on; he lost his sales job in August. The condo they bought 15 years ago is worth less than their mortgage, and 40 percent of his 401(k) retirement savings is gone. Donna is the main provider now, running a daycare center out of their home.

401Ks are the real Ponzi scheme NOT Social Security
Joe R

From the SS web site:
Q1: When did Social Security start?
A: The Social Security Act was signed by FDR on 8/14/35. Taxes were collected for the first time in January 1937 and the first one-time, lump-sum payments were made that same month. Regular ongoing monthly benefits started in January 1940.
I should have said that SS has been in existence for 77 years, regular monthly payments started in 1940 through wars and recessions. Not a Ponzi scheme. BUt right wingers are blind to facts because they have their cherished lies or they are just ignorant of the truth.

NOT A PONZI SCHEME?
The first person to receive monthly payments, Ida May Fuller, got her first check in January 1940. She continued to receive a monthly check until she passed away at age 100 in 1975.
She put $24.75 into the system before she retired and received $22,888.92 over the course of her retirement years. Not much by today's standards. But where did that money come from? It came from people who were working and contributing to SSI.
Baby Boomers put a lot of money into the system, and now they are starting to retire in large numbers. Who is going to be putting money into the system to cover all of them? That's right, the GenXers and other younger folks. In a few years there could be more retirees than workers.
As a retired Boomer, I hope they keep working because I plan to live a long time. and

In taking the time to read all the comments on this issue, I have noticed a trend. It seems that many of those posters, who think the governor’s behavior is acceptable, seem to reflect the same behavior themselves; they come across as vulgar, in your face, rude and in many cases; poorly educated. I suppose if I were a loud mouth, in your face individual I would like Governor Lard too. The reason, because likes (not opposites) attract each other. Another noticeable feature about his supporters is that they cloak their identity, many use monikers like (examples only) Joeblo, Larry R, Jerzyjoe, d34s etc etc. I believe if one has an opinion he/she should be transparent and use his or her full, real name. Just my opinion!

Gee Rick, so Social Security has been making monthly payments since 1940, 72 years. Never missed a payment through wars, recessions and GOP attempts to kill it. You are right, SS was never meant to replace pensions but it has become the main source of income for tens of millions of seniors and they are thankful for it. 401Ks are a cruel joke for millions of Americans, just read the citations I quoted from above.

Gosh Joe, If you are under 50 you had better hope that Social Security is still around when you reach 67.
Before SS and until somewhere in the early '70s people understood that SS was just a suppliment to retirement income. They saved for retirement long before 401Ks or IRAs. They put their money in a bank savings account or bought government bonds or stocks.

I'm far from a financial expert, but neither are you or you wouldn't have posted articles from magazines. I do know 401k's are market driven and yes, when the market is down, investments are down. The point is that any losses in 401k's are temporary setbacks and when the market rebounds, as it has in the last few years, your assets rebound. The only people who would have lost on their 401k's would have been retirees during the height of the recession who withdrew their entire savings. I doubt many savvy investors would have opted for that. If you want to get the best advice, the experts would be the 401k owners themselves and their fund managers. I am certainly not complaining that my 401k has more than doubled in 15 yrs. even WITH the recession, so I don't understand why you are.

As far as Social Security goes, this is the biggest Ponzi scheme and joke of all. How many seniors do you know that exist on Social Security alone who live above the poverty level? I can't say I know any, because the seniors I know all have retirement accounts which bring their standard of living up. I wish I had all the money I put into Social Security over the years, because it would have grown expotentially through my own investing. Instead, it goes to other retirees to live below the poverty line.

Social Security is not a Ponzi scheme because there is no Charles Ponzi to siphon off millions or billions of dollars. The right wingers and the GOP refer to SS as a Ponzi scheme to reel in gullible fools or just ordinary uninformed people to believe that SS will not be there for them. They have been saying that SS is a Ponzi scheme for about 60 plus years. SS's finances are totally transparent, everything is open and subject to scrutiny, just go to the SS web site, it's an open book, unlike a Ponzi scheme. The anti-SS mob sneeringly refer to SS as a Ponzi scheme to undermine confidence in the program and to turn younger people against SS. The lies about SS are legion. For years my late cousin's CPA told him that SS was a Ponzi scheme and that it would not be there for him. His CPA was a lying scum sucking piece of filth because SS was there for my cousin when he needed it. SS will be there unless the GOP privatizes it or turns it over to Wall Street.

Here is something else about SS that I find interesting: Many of those illegals who work for large corporations (i.e. Wendy's, Taco Bell) give false SS#'s. The money is taken out of their pay. They have zero chance of ever receiving it back. That money still goes into SS.

When you dont agree, say you dont agree, calling someone stupid, uneducated and ranting off makes you look like the dumba$$. IF the guy thinks its a Ponzi Scheme, then so be it. You think its something else (SAD, but so be it). What is bad about SS is the millions of people who never paid a DIME into it but get the minimum, or get SS disability and then go get paid off the books. Its happening all over the place, and if your a younger person like myself you should be able to opt out and have your own account of what you paid in to invest as you wish. Not WALL Street, not CPA's, not Lawyers, give it to ME as it should be mine I pay into it. SO if I paid in 2-300K over the years, SS is going to give me 2K a month based on that?, me and another person who only paid in 50K? or if I drop dead tomorrow under age 65 I get nothing? at least my 401k would go to my wife if I die. Sounds like a PONZI scheme to me. I'd rather have the 300k as I can earn more then that a month. But that statement will prompt you to spout off that I am a Right wing nut job. Anyway, the point is all Gov't programs begin with all the right intensions but end up being a money pit for the next generation to manage. The best idea would be for every law created 2 need to be rescinded in order to pass, that would at least force these clown a$$ politicians to read the laws on the books and think twice before they add something new to money pit. Call me names now, I'm grown up now and wont tell the principal.

@MapleaffanNJ- Using your analogy of getting back 2k a month after you paid in 300k, you do realize that that in 12 and a half years you would have recveived every dime you paid into the system; right? So who exactly will be paying your stipend after that? As for 401k, ask a lot of people who unfortunately retired in 2007-2010 how they feel when even though they were playing it conservatively by being in bonds, still ened up getting screwed as the bottom of the market fell out and all the gains they had made in 20 years got wiped out. Here's a novel concept, its called shared responsibility = shared rewards. Yeah some people get over by cheating the system, so freaking what... the majority play by the rules and are rewarded. Thats akin to saying that because there is a lot of fraud on Wall Street you won't invest! How is that logical?
Rick
2:22 pm on Wednesday, July 11, 2012
KJ,
If you put in 300k, it would have been drawing increasing interest over the years so it would be more than 300k. And if you draw off 2k a month, your balance would still be earning interest.
The 2k per month you mentioned is 8.3% per year. Even 5% T Bonds will extend that initial 300k for quite a few years.

It's like the cash option v the annuity option if you hit one of the big lottery prizes. If you take the annuity the state sells it to an insurance company for whatever the cash option would be or less. With a 20 year payout you get 5% per year. With a 25 year payout you get 4% per year.
Right now it might be hard to get those rates, but in a few years you might be able to do much better.

Excuse me, but when someone lies and says that SS is a Ponzi scheme, I will call them on it. Your SS payouts depend on your work history and how long you worked. It is extremely difficult to get disability insurance from SS, you really have to prove your case. To Mapleleaf: being disabled is not a fun thing or some scam, it's a tragedy that I would not wish on anyone. If you have kidney failure, dialysis can cost $150,000 a year. Will your 401K take care of that, NO, but SS disability insurance will take care of it. Mapleleaf seems to think being disabled is a joke. The SS wage tax he pays goes to his elderly relatives, if he has any and what if he or relative became disabled (I hope that never happens). SS disability would be there for him or his family.

Joe R - very good post. If the government succeeds in getting rid of SS and re places it with 401K's.it will be one of the BIGGEST corporate give away. You see, emloyers must contribute their share towards Social Security BUT NOT on 401K's. (some do - but the numbers are falling for that too.) @Joe R.- Let me educate you a little bit on 401K and SS a little bit. You cannot copy/paste your way to enlightenment. SS is a PONZY scheme for a couple very simple reason. 1. The taxes that you pay into the SS trust fund never add up to a sum that you will ultimately receive during your retirement years much like most state and municipal pensions (but that is part 2). 2. SS trust fund can only invest into US Treasury obligations which now pay almost nothing so a rate of return on the money invested is almost nill while the payouts stay the same. 3. The interest on those bonds is paid by the Treasury from you income tax dollars that is why when you hear people talk about national debt and cutting entitlements is b/c SS doubles liability for the US govt. As far 401K are concerned by nature those plans are subject to market fluctuations and their value rises and falls with the market (Of course if the value of your portfolio is down at the time you are retiring you will need to extending your retirement date or make smaller withdrawals until your portfolio rebounds by no means a doomsday scenario). BTW so is your defined benefit plan your union pension invests into the same stocks and bonds as a 401k does with one major difference.
Gene
6:16 am on Thursday, July 12, 2012
You don't get any disability payments for yourself or your children from 401k's. Unlike these funds, SS was never meant to be a gambling casino. It is only a safety net and would remain solvent way into the future if they raised the cap above 110.1K (for 2012).
Michael Mirkin
12:55 pm on Wednesday, July 11, 2012
cont'd - If a pension fund has a short fall b/c it's projected rate of return was not met guess who is on the hook for the difference. Which is going to happen next year when accounting standards for pensions will change. The taxpayer has to make up the difference! It is a little different with private company pensions unless they are at a union shop like GM. You remember what almost happened to GM and how much of liability they had b/c their pension fund was not fully funded and b/c of union contracts they could not change the structure to keep the company going down the tubes without US govt/taxpayer rescue that we will never recoup! Before you say what about WS they repaid with interest and a huge profit for the Treasury I think the last # stood @ $15B. I hope this helps if not I am sure I can copy and paste something else that you can read.

SS has a trust fund worth $2.7 TRILLION and it earns interest. Treasury bonds are one of the safest investments on earth. What the heck is wrong with copying and pasting my sources and supplying data to one clown who said what I was saying about 401Ks was a fairy tale? If I don't cite my source then the righties will say I'm lying or it's a fairy tale. I will continue to copy and paste reliable sources. SS is meant as a backstop for people at retirement. Its not a panacea nor does it preclude anyone from saving for their own retirement. You won't get rich from receiving your SS payments because its really meant to save retired folks from having to steal cat food from supermarkets to feed themselves and their pets. You see there is this thing called inflation, and even if you saved all your life inflation might just make your retirement years hard to survive. Since not everybody is going to be a millionare or at least back then they weren't, people in governments around the world realized that a lot of people who were retiring would overburden the tax system for those that were working because people were no longer dying off at 30. Hence the idea of a national insurance scheme called social security in the US was developed. Unfortunately, as PT Barnum said; there is a sucker born every minute; and so a lot of people who have zero analytical skills will repeatedly spout off so called truisims without considering the above nor this; are you really that selfish that it precludes you from understanding that SS is a shared sacrifice= shared reward plan? Not to worry, life has a way of levelling the playing field through misery so perhaps my kids will be the ones catching some of you in the supermarket trying to steal pet food so that you have something to eat at nights, just as I did 20 years ago as a teenager.

"Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are H. L. @Rick- I left the interest issue out because it can be woefully taken out of context. For instance, while you will get more interest from private concerns than the government, the former is open to manipulation (see Libor scandal among others) and wild fluctuations while steady eddy government rates smooths out the waves. Further, you nor I cannot predict the rates in the future so we woudl be comparing apples to oranges if we assume exorbitantly high rates for private concerns and miniscule government rates, just for the sake of winning an argument. Besides, both 401-k's and SS earn interest on some level.

@Rick 1:52 PM: Good information. Ike and Nixon were to the left of Obama. Ike actually strengthened Social Security, he did not try to privatize it like the Bush. Nixon also set up the EPA which the current crop of Gopers want to gut and eliminate so their buddies in the fossil fuel industry can pollute with more impunity. But Nixon was a totally corrupt unconvicted felon. The top marginal tax rate under Ike was 91% and under Nixon the top marginal tax rate was 70%. There is really no comparison between the parties, the GOP has gone nuts, off the rails by a huge margin (Bachmann, Palin , Alan West, Steve King, the other King, Rand Paul, etc., ad nauseam).

Both Ike & Nixon served during times when both houses of Congress were controlled by Dems. The budget and thereby the tax rates are created by the House and then approved by the Senate before going to the President for his signature.
And if the budget is approved by a large enough number vetoing it won't do anything because Congress will simply override the veto.

One of the reasons why NJ has fiscal problems other than the obvious ones like bad fiscal decisons by leaders is the fact that they are way too many small hamlets/towns/conclaves; whatever you want to call them; which the residents are eager to keep with their own school district, police force, mayor, council, etc, etc. In other words they want to keep their services, and preserve their small town feel but simply cannot afford it. Meanwhile they have had a litany of politicians who keep on insisting that they can afford it, if they just take from the other guy who hell doesn't "deserve" it. Well chickies, I am here to tell you the Emperor has no clothes. NJ cannot afford to NOT consolidate and merge many of their myriad of small towns if they want to at least keep the level of services that they have now. Sure the government is too big, but thats because the residents want a lot of services and too much have too much ivested in continuing the staus quo. How many people know someone who works for some town or municiaplity earning 60k a year without the hellish Manhattan or Philly commute? My advice, look at what Pelham, NY did in terms of consolidating like 5 different Pelhams- Pelham Manor, Pelham Village, North Pelham, Pelhamville, etc. They were able to succefully keep the small town feel, great school district, responsive police/fire forces and safe community with taxes at a reasonable level (well reasonable for Westchester Count, NY).

Governor Christie’s recent vacation in his power zone sums up perfectly why his weight is his only true substance. His classless public response in front of his family to an unintelligent jerk’s remark on the Seaside boardwalk showcases his admiration for the tactics of the leadership of the Seaside Park police department, who has routinely patrolled the boardwalk as a gang of street punks beating up single individuals who they knew were unable to defend themselves. It warmed the Governor’s heart so much that he forgave the lowlife police department (who should have been indicated on documented gross federal human rights violations) and even rewarded the ringleader of this street gang with a 100% lifetime disability payment because he was too fat to do or get another job (not to mention too stupid.) Yes, Governor Christie is exactly what he portrays himself to be: a grossly overweight, undisciplined, loudmouthed boardwalk bully. Chris Christie is a 3-ring circus, not a national leader.

This governor nor any other governor "rewards" anyone with a 100% disability payments. That is set by pension laws and in this case the contract between the employee and the Seaside Park PD.

I know enough to know there are so many conflicts of interest, one could walk on them. For example...

Ah Ha!, Mr. Tim Zatzanny Jr. writer of this article and I'm sure it's headline, indicates C.C. lost his cool? Now assuming C.C. even has a cool to lose, what kind of 3rd year journalism majors is this county producing? Maybe "Blew a fuse" ... "Went of the deep end", but "Lost his Cool"? So, 70'sish. So, MSNBCish. And your welcome for me not saying, "Got his panties twisted in a knot."

Wow, I guess you all know that Gov. Christie LOVES this attention!! It truly makes me sick when my fellow NJ residents say he's doing a good job - really? Sorry, I don't see it - I hear rhetoric, I hear bullying, and I see a man who has the philosopy 'You're either for us or against us' (sound familiar?) Such a shame; he made a decent attorney (is there such a thing??) but if he were a student in one of our children's classes or if he were a teacher in the school district and spoke to or treated our children the way he treats anyone that upsets him, he would've been fired by now. I'm so very confused as to why a BULLY is being considered a great leader, by anyone. A BULLY IS A BULLY IS A BULLY - he's not compared to the likes of the wretched WWII leaders, but I have to admit, whenever I see his smug face, I think of Mussolini on the podium, when he shouted out things and everyone cheered - months later, they killed him!! 'The country and the world love Chris Christie'..... seriously? Think back to that Mussolini video; they loved him too!!
