Vegetable gardens should be positioned in an area that gets 6 to 8 hours of sunlight daily, and Geri Van Wezel-Bolen of Dearborn says it's best to mix soil with organic compost.

Dearborn Market offers homemade compost in its gardening center. Customers can bring gallon jugs or buy them in the store to fill.
