Christie to Visit Oceanport, Address Water Main Break

The governor will give an update on the water main failure on Saturday at Wolf Hill Recreation Center at 1:45 p.m.

Gov. Chris Christie will visit Oceanport on Saturday afternoon to address the water main break that has placed residents of about 22 Monmouth County towns under a boil-water advisory and severely restricted water usage.

The governor will give an update at 1:45 p.m. at the Wolf Hill Recreation Area, 3 Crescent Pl., on the water main failure on Friday at the Swimming River Reservoir that prompted county officials to declare a state of emergency.

Late Friday night, the county issued a press release that said all Monmouth County towns were under the boil water advisory. On Saturday morning, officials issued the list of just 22 towns that are directly affected.

Towns directly affected by this crisis that are still under the boil-water advisory are Middletown, Holmdel, Aberdeen, Highlands, Rumson, Fair Haven, Little Silver, Oceanport, Sea Bright, Tinton Falls, Shrewsbury, Long Branch, Eatontown, West Long Branch, Deal, Allenhurst, Loch Arbor and Neptune. Monmouth Beach and Shrewsbury and Ocean townships were added this morning.

Isn't NJAWC a private company? seems to me that you're making an excellent case for government regulation and oversight

Christie called the press conference to admit it was he who was on the bridge when it collapsed .

Aberdeen gets water from 3 different water utilities, yet they don't specify who has to boil and who does not. A little clarity would go a long way!

Nice spin, Dan; but has it dawned on you that the small gov't/anti-union members of Congress have dragged their feet on major infrastructure programs? This is a perfect example of how events on the ground can make rigid ideology and politics look silly.

I don't need to hear from Christie about this. Let me hear from the water company. Christie can keep golfing.

NJ American Water knew quit some time ago this would eventually break down.. Just like every other major Utility the "wait until it breaks" mentality comes into play.. The almighty dollar strikes again.... I agree with Kevin. Who needs Christie to congest the area more to tell us what we already know ... NJAWC should be the ones updating us through reverse 911 , radio, tv, or whatever other means needed to keep us informed..

John,

I am with you. The damaged bridge has been that way since Irene came ripping through this area and they never fixed it.

the article says that a list of 22 towns was released, but you listed only 21 towns, with Shrewsbury being named twice..

Hi aa, there are two Shrewsburys: Shrewsbury Borough and Shrewsbury Township. Both are under the most recent update of the boil water advisory.

Shrewsbury Township is also affected. The Water Company will be setting up a water station on Crawford Street in Shrewsbury Township by the park in about an hour.

Unless he's bringing in the Army Corps of Engineers to immediately correct the problem, please stay away. We have enough traffic issues to deal with without him and his entourage.

It's pretty ironic that NJ American Water keeps sending me literature asking me to pay them to insure my house against waterline breaks! What were they thinking?

American Water is investor owned. Guess they don't like to keep up with infrastructure.
Would be interesting to know who the investor are.

The bridge was in need of repair before this! Now we have a serious problem. The ball was really dropped.

This bridge has been damaged since Hurricane Irene last August, yet, apparently, no attempt was made to repair it. Now, on a holiday weekend, when the temperature is in the nineties, the bridge fails and thousands of customers are inconvenienced. This was an avoidable event. The company and it's officials should face the conquences for failing to meet their responsibilities to the public!

I don't know who's at fault but I can tell you this, the water company and the township knew something was up. How do I know? Because all of them were just out there last month looking over the situation. And how did they know to go look? Because last years hurricane destroyed everything around that dam including homes. Now we need to wonder just how safe the road bridge is to drive over. Get ready for a hike in your water bill. I mean, who else do you think is going to pay for it. One more thing, instead of the state helping to fund private enterprise in solar electric that will cost us higher electric through hidden utility bill taxes, spend the money on this project. And for the idiot that talk about congress not funding for infrastructure, look no farther than Obamas Stimulus Bill. Shovel $ hit ready. Maybe we should forget all this nonsense of depending on social development and redevelopment and go back to well water and septic. Might as well because as soon as the states and country go bankrupt, we'll be left to defend for ourselves anyways.

Looking at photos of the "bridge" that the pipes went over, that was an accident waiting to happen. The wait until it breaks attitude is pervasive in our society, not just in big corporations. Life will go on.......

I am very concerned about the lack of information for people with health concerns. I am dependent on others for assistance and currently have no aide. I have indwelling medical equipment that must remain sterile. It is imperative that I have clean water to wash my hands. I've tried to find out more information specifically for my needs but have been unable to get any information for those with special needs. Unfortunately I am left to wonder how best to care for myself.

Mary Lynn, maybe you could call your local Police Department or Health Department for some answers. Good Luck!

Thank you Linda but since it is the weekend there is no one to contact. I spoke with my home health nurse yesterday and they are sending me some extra disposable items but it might not get here until Tuesday. I have tried to find the items that I need at local pharmacies but I need a doctors Rx which I can not get until Monday. This is not an easy task for someone who is housebound. The police can bring me bottled water but I am ok with that for a few days. Worse comes to worse I will have to go to the emergency room and see if they can give me some supplies to tied me over. It's hard for me to get out though and I'm sure that they have better things to do than get me supplies but it's a course of last resort.

Mary, I would call Riverview Hospital and/or your police department who will hook you up to he first aid who may have answers for you or get you some clean water.
What town are you in?

Thank you. I am in Long Branch. As I said earlier, I can go to the Emergency Room at Monmouth Medical Center but I will use that as a last resort. I don't like to tax the system if I can manage on my own. I won't be able to shower since I can not expose the sterile equipment to possible pathogens. Monday I will have to explore my options with my visiting nurse and case manager. I am certain I am not the only person having these problems. I wonder how others are coping.

The state and or water company should deliver water locally....to our home, town office or local supermarkets should have vouchers. Why should I have to drive 30 to 40 minutes one way, especially in near 100 degree temperatures ! This is very unfair.
