Bites Nearby: Maloney's Pub & Grill in Matawan
This pub on Main Street has a wide variety of domestic and local beers in a comfortable environment
Overview: Maloney's is located on Main Street in Matawan very close to a free parking lot. The Irish vibe is warm and welcoming.
Decor: Maloney's prides itself on being a local hot spot for domestic and imported beers, on top of friendly staff and a fun, yet comfortable, atmosphere. The pub is run with the motto: "Great Food. Great Drinks. Great Times." There are TVs located around the pub, which are always tuned to the hottest sport.
The Drinks: When they advertise a wide beer menu, there is no exaggeration - Maloney's offers 75 different choices in beer, with both domestic and imported brews on tap. Not sure what to order? Neither was I, but the bartender was able to help me pick the perfect beer for my taste. Since it is October, I went with a Yeungling Oktobrefest. Delicious!
Appetizers: The menu offers plenty of options to start off with, and a few with Irish roots like the Dublin Brie ($9) and the Crock O'Irish Soup ($6). You can also opt for a salad, beer battered onion rings or nachos.
Entrees: Entrees range from the Maloney's Burger ($10), which is eight ounces of sirloin, topped with bacon, Swiss cheese, and our exclusive Maloney's horse-radish mustard mayonnaise and served on a toasted English Muffin to the Grouper Oregenatta ( $16), a baked fillet of Grouper topped with seasoned breadcrumbs and served in a light lemon, white wine sauce. I personally chose the Grilled Portabella Mushroom Burger with a side of fries and found it to be quite tasty. The portabella mushroom was grilled for just the right amount of time and topped with fresh mozzarella, making it the perfect lunch.
Brunch: Maloney's recently started serving Sunday morning brunch starting at 11 a.m. Head on down everything from Steak and Eggs ($13) and Three Little Pigs Sandwich ($10) to the French Toast ($9).
Service: The service at Maloney's was very attentive and friendly. I sat at the bar, and found the bartenders to be conversational and interesting. They helped me pick a beer I never tried before, and I really enjoyed it.
Signature Dish: Maloney's Rueben - Irish corned beef, sliced thin, atop toasted rye bread and topped with sauerkraut and thousand island dressing. ($11)
