Best Buy to Close 50 Stores Next Year
The big box retailer also announced it will cut 400 jobs.
Best Buy has announced plans to close 50 of its 1,100 big box stores nationwide in 2013 and step up efforts to sell mobile and computing products through smaller, "standalone" locations.
The company said it will save $800 million over the next three years by cutting 400 corporate and support jobs as well as the 50 stores. The announcement did not state whether any decision has been made about which stores will be closed.
Best Buy reported a loss of $1.7 billion, or $4.89 a share for the quarter ending March 3, compared to a profit of $651 million, or $1.62 a share for the same period last year. The company said this performance was impacted by $2.6 billion in restructuring costs and other charges.
"In order to help make technology work for every one of our customers and transform our business as the consumer electronics industry continues to evolve," CEO Brian J. Dunn said Best Buy will be "closing some big box stores" and "adding Best Buy Mobile stand-alone locations."
Dunn said the moves are designed "to provide a better shopping environment for our customers across multiple channels while increasing points of presence, and to improve performance and profitability."
One report, by CDNET, attibutes the changes to increasing pressure from online retailers, especially Amazon.
The Best Buy announcement also said the chain would cut 400 jobs in "corporate and support areas" and achieve additional savings "in cost of goods sold driven by reduction of product transition costs, lower product return and exchange expenses and supply chain efficiencies."
An expansion of customer benefits in Best Buy's "Reward Zone Silver" loyalty program is also planned, including "free expedited shipping, premier access to many of the most popular products and major sales events, a free house call from the Geek Squad, and 60-day no hassle returns and price-match policy."

I wish planning boards could have a crystal ball. There is so much anticipation and joy when these big box stores announce their plans to build. Then, reality sets in and we all end up with huge, empty eyesores along our highways that are difficult to retrofit by other chains. Case in point. Take a look at the Lowes in Sayreville; empty for nearly a year. That store was built less than three miles from their Marlboro store. Lowes was obviously competing against their own store, while trying to create a no Home Depot zone around them. Best Buy? Well...did they really need a Manalapan and a Howell store. Taking bets which one of those two will be empty soon.

I totally agree, Marc, but the Sayreville Lowes was there for years before they built the Marlboro one. The first Lowes anywhere near us was in South Plainsfield. Now THAT was a hike! I was thrilled when they opened the Sayreville one (actually I think it's Old Bridge) and I was able to cut that trip down a little. The one I miss the most is the Seaview Square one. I know it had to close for safety reasons, but I still felt its loss. The stupid Burlington Coat Factory their now just ain't cuttin' it with me.

Next up PetSmart! How many do we actually need along RTEs 9 and 18??
I wish we could expand our elementary schools into these places. Easy to divide up, already have tons of electric, bathrooms, etc and you could have an indoor, year round playground.

Not a bad idea - we could even keep their pet grooming facilities in tact.

I love Best Buy -but their bubble is now bursting because:
1. I have three years at 0% interest to pay off that new 50" HDTV.
2. They price match any competitors price.
3. Overstaffed - There are employees standing around EVERYWHERE.
4. Reward Zone earns awesome Best Buy Cash, free shipping, & liberal return policy.
5. xbox discs can be purchased buy 1 get 1 free or some other wacky sale a good portion of the time.
Dang it, I just made Silver Reward Zone status too.
