Aberdeen Appoints Contractor for Rt. 34 Sidewalk Project

The project may begin as soon as April

The Aberdeen Township Council appointed MNC General Contracting Inc. of Old Bridge to complete sidewalk renovations along Route 34 at their meeting Tuesday night.

The $177,000 is being partially funded by a $160,000 grant from the New Jersey Department of Transportation. The township will pay the remaining $17,000, which will be extracted from Aberdeen's infrastructure account, according to township manager Holly Reycraft.

The project involves the construction of a four-foot wide concrete sidewalk that runs from where the Henry Hudson Trail intersects Route 34, which is about 325 feet south of Broad Street, to 150 feet south of South Atlantic Avenue, Reycraft said. Concrete ramps, curb ramp delineation and a chain link pedestrian protection fence at the Gravelly Brook bridge approaches will also be installed during the project.

The project may begin in April, Reycraft said, depending on the contractor's schedule.

The council for the project at the end of December in order to reduce the cost. The plan originally submitted to the New Jersey Department of Transportation also included the reconstruction of Locust Street and Grove Street, as the town had combined the two projects to go to bid only once, explained Township Attorney Daniel McCarthy.
